Record-Setting Round Has Flames in Lead at ASUN Championship

4/25/2023 10:57:52 PM | Men's Golf

No. 1 seed Liberty closed out a long day at the 2023 ASUN Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday with a program and a conference championship records to place the Flames atop the Day 1 leaderboard.

Liberty carded a 27-under par 261 during its second trip around the RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove (par 72, 7,212 yards).

The 261 marked the lowest 18-hole total in Liberty program history. The Flames’ second round score also set a new ASUN Championship standard for low 18-hole score, low 18-hole score vs. par and low second-round score.

With the record-setting performance, Liberty rocketed up the leaderboard during the afternoon into first place with an overall 40-under par 536 (275-261).

Due to the threat of inclement weather on Thursday, ASUN officials decided to play 36 holes today. Despite the lengthy time at the course, records fell throughout the day.

Jacksonville State, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, opened play with a then 18-hole conference record 19-under par 269. The Gamecocks saw Liberty better the mark by eight strokes during the afternoon.

The par-72 Robert Trent Jones designed course played at a scoring average of 70.81 during the morning flight and a 70.64 scoring average during the afternoon round.

The top-ranked teams in the 14-team field rose to the top of the leaderboard following the first day’s action at the championship event.

Liberty, who is ranked No. 39 in the country, holds an eight-shot lead over No. 42 ranked North Florida (271-273) and Jacksonville State (269-275). Both teams enter tomorrow’s final round with a 32-under par 544.

A total of 48 players finished the day in red figures, led by Jacksonville State’s Erik Jansson, who leads the championship with a 14-under par 130 (66-64).

A pair of Flames are one shot off the lead. Jonathan Yaun (68-63) and Isaac Simmons (64-67) share second place with a 13-under par 131.

Connor Polender rounds out Liberty’s top-10 performers in the championship, as he is in ninth place with a 9-under par 135 (72-65).

Simmons opened the day with a career-low 8-under par 64, featuring a clean card with eight birdies and 10 pars.

Polender and Yaun one-upped their teammate during the afternoon flight. Both carded 9-under par 63, featuring matching scoring cards of seven birdies and an eagle.

The 9-under par 63 matched Liberty’s individual program record for the lowest 18-hole score in program history.

With the inclement weather shift in schedule, the championship will now conclude on Wednesday. Liberty will be seeking its second ASUN Conference title (also in 2021) and the program’s second conference title at the NCAA Division I level.

Liberty, along with North Florida and Jacksonville State will be the final three teams off the No. 1 tee at the RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove, starting at 9:40 a.m. CST on Wednesday.
