After a dominant opening weekend to conference play, Liberty sophomore Kate Phillips was named ASUN Volleyball Player of the Week.
A native of Encinitas, Calif., Phillips is the first Lady Flame since Trinity Watts on Sept. 7, 2021 to be named ASUN Player of the Week. Phillips was named ASUN Freshman of the Week on Sept. 27, 2021, after opening her career with three straight 10-kill matches on the first weekend of ASUN matches.
Phillips had the best statistical weekend of any ASUN attacker, averaging a conference-best 5.0 kills per set while hitting an ASUN-leading .481 combined in a pair of 3-0 sweeps over ASUN newcomer Queens. She added 4.33 digs per set and 0.17 blocks per set.
On Friday, Phillips hit a career-best .500 while sending down a match-high 18 kills, averaging six kills per set in a 3-0 sweep over Queens. She added seven digs. Her 18 kills were the most by a Liberty player in a three-set match since Nov. 12, 2019. She helped Liberty hit a season-best .357 as a team.
During Sunday's 3-0 sweep, Phillips hit .458 with a match-high-tying 12 kills and added a match-high 19 digs for her 10th career double-double and fourth this season.
The Lady Flames (9-5, 2-0 ASUN) are one of four teams to be 2-0 in ASUN play so far. Liberty will welcome two of the remaining three, Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State, to Liberty Arena this weekend.
