Perlaza Zapata Set to Race at World Athletics Championships

7/22/2022 8:24:31 AM | Track and Field

Former Liberty All-American Alejandro Perlaza Zapata will make his third appearance at the World Athletics Championships, beginning on Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. He will represent Colombia in the men’s 4 x 400 relay.

The men’s 4 x 400 relay prelims will take place Saturday at 8:40 p.m. Eastern and will be televised live on CNBC. The final is slated for Sunday at 10:35 p.m. Eastern and will air live on NBC.

Perlaza Zapata previously ran on Colombia’s men’s 4 x 400 relay squad at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London and at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha. In 2019, Colombia placed fourth in the event, marking the best finish in the nation’s history.

Perlaza Zapata has also raced in the men’s 4 x 400 relay at a pair of Olympics, including Rio in 2016 and last summer’s games in Tokyo.

This will be Perlaza Zapata’s first appearance at the new Hayward Field, which opened in 2021. However, he raced at the old Hayward Field, taking part in the men’s 400 at the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Perlaza Zapata spent the final two years of his collegiate career at Liberty in 2018 and 2019. He earned a pair of All-America honors, placing sixth in the 400 at the 2019 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships and fifth in the 400 at the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He owns five school records, headlined by his 44.86 clocking in the 400 from the 2018 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
