Parra Romero Receives 1st ASUN Player of the Week Award of Season
Sophomore Maria Juliana Parra Romero of the Liberty women’s tennis team received the first ASUN Women’s Tennis Player of the Week award of the 2023 season, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
Parra Romero’s honor is the second of her career and ninth all-time for the program. She also received the award during her freshman campaign on Feb. 22, 2022.
Parra Romero was a perfect 2-0 in the No. 1 singles slot and 1-1 in the No. 1 doubles position in matches against Middle Tennessee and Florida International during the opening weekend of the season.
On Friday versus Middle Tennessee, she helped the Lady Flames win the doubles point with a 6-3 decision on court one with her partner Marina Davtyan. The duo topped Muskan Gupta and Noella Mauro of the Blue Raiders to clinch the doubles point. In singles competition, she won on court one in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 over Love-Star Alexis. Her triumph made it 3-1 Liberty in an eventual 4-3 win over MTSU.
On Sunday against the Florida International Panthers, Parra Romero was victorious again at No. 1 singles, besting Yasmine Kabbaj 6-3, 7-5. The sophomore from Bucaramanga, Colombia is 13-3 in singles and 9-2 in doubles overall on the year (including fall play).
Parra Romero and the Lady Flames (1-1) will be back in action on Jan. 28 when they host East Carolina (0-1) and Longwood (0-0) in a doubleheader. Liberty and ECU will square off at 9 a.m. The Lady Flames and Longwood Lancers will meet at 5 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
