No. 72 Liberty will face No. 70 North Florida and Stetson at home, Thursday and Saturday to close out regular season competition.
The Flames (8-10, 4-2 ASUN) will first square off with the North Florida Ospreys (14-6, 5-1 ASUN), Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Liberty Tennis Complex. On Saturday, Liberty will meet Stetson (10-8, 3-3 ASUN) in its last regular season match at 3 p.m. Saturday is Senior Day for the Liberty men’s tennis program. The team will honor senior and two-time ASUN Player of the Week Nicaise Muamba with a special ceremony.
Liberty (4-2) is currently in fourth place in the ASUN, behind No. 71 Kennesaw State (6-1), No. 73 FGCU (6-1) and No. 70 UNF (5-1). The Flames have already clinched a spot in next weekend’s ASUN Men’s Tennis Championship and have won four straight conference contests, but these two matches will help determine seeding for the tournament.
Liberty split a pair of matches last weekend, topping Bellarmine 6-1 in ASUN action and falling 6-1 to No. 36 VCU in a non-conference contest. UNF defeated North Alabama 7-0 in their most recent match, while Stetson also bested UNA 7-0 in their last contest.
Flames News and Notes
• This will be the third all-time meeting between Liberty and UNF. The series is even at 1-1. The Flames bested the Ospreys 4-3 in the regular season meeting in 2019. UNF edged Liberty 4-3 in the ASUN Championship semifinal round that year.
• The Flames are 1-1 all-time against the Stetson Hatters. Liberty topped Stetson 5-2 in 2019. The Hatters won the inaugural meeting in 1995 by a 5-0 count.
• Liberty’s victories over UNF and Stetson in 2019 both came at home. The Flames’ Nicaise Muamba and Josh Wilson were both members of the 2019 squad that faced the Ospreys and Hatters. Liberty posted a 6-1 ASUN regular season mark in 2019 in what was its first year in the league.
• No. 72 Liberty has been nationally ranked eight times this season. The Flames reached as high as the No. 57 spot (Feb. 23). Over the past two years, Liberty has been nationally ranked 15 times. The Flames’ best mark was No. 39, achieved on May 26, 2021.
• In singles, Liberty has been led by Christiaan Worst (12-5) and Wilson (10-5), this spring. Worst has won six straight matches. The Pretoria, South Africa native holds a 3-0 record in the No. 3 position and 9-5 mark in the No. 4 slot. Wilson sports a 10-5 mark and earned ASUN Player of the Week honors on March 8, his sixth career ASUN Player of the Week award.
• The 2022 Men’s Women’s Tennis Championship will be hosted by FGCU, April 22-24 at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. The Flames are 3-1 all-time in ASUN Championship play and captured their first conference title in program history in 2021.
