No. 41 Liberty Takes 4th Place at Schenkel Invitational
No. 41 Liberty closed out a busy Spring Break week with its best round at the 43rd annual Schenkel Invitational to finish the event in fourth place.
After carding matching rounds of 1-under par 287, the Flames closed the Georgia Southern hosted tournament with a 3-under par 285 on Sunday during its third trip around the Forest Heights Country Club (par 72, 7,123 yards).
Liberty finished the event with an overall 5-under par 859 (287-287-285), securing Liberty’s sixth top-five finish of the 2022-23 season.
Tournament host and No. 19 ranked Georgia Southern ran away with the team title. The Eagles won their second-straight event title and fourth in program history with a final score of 27-under par 837 (272-281-284).
No. 24 Mississippi State finished in a distant second place with a 16-under par 848 (284-280-284).
Middle Tennessee, a future Conference USA foe for the Flames, finished two strokes ahead of Liberty in third place with a 7-under par 857 (291-281-285).
Two other ASUN Conference teams were in the 14-team field. No. 45 North Florida finished tied for seventh place with a 12-over par 876 (302-288-286). FGCU finished tied for ninth place with a 14-over par 878 (300-287-291).
Georgia Southern’s Ben Carr, the 83rd-ranked player in the country, sank a birdie putt on the par-5, No. 18 hole (600 yards) to claim a one-shot individual win. The Eagles top golfer claimed medalist honors with a winning score of 8-under par 208 (68-68-72).
Four out of Liberty’s five starters posted a top-25 finish in the 84-man field. Freshman Josh Ryan carded five birdies during the final round on Sunday to finish tied for 12th place with an overall 1-under par 215 (73-74-68).
Connor Polender (72-71-72) offset four bogeys with four birdies to share 12th place with Ryan with a 1-under par 215.
Austin Barbin (T16 even par 216/72-71-73) and Jonathan Yaun (T22 1-over par 217/72-71-74) rounded out the Flames’ top finishers.
