    No. 16 Liberty will face No. 9 Connecticut in a rematch of last year’s BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship game, Friday afternoon. The Lady Flames will close out the weekend with a home non-conference contest versus the Longwood Lancers on Sunday.

    Liberty (4-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) and UConn (6-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) will square off on Friday at 2 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Sports Complex, site of the 2021 BIG EAST Championship. The Lady Flames defeated the Huskies 1-0 in the championship game at the facility on Nov. 7, 2021 for their first BIG EAST title.

    Liberty and Commonwealth foe Longwood (2-5, 0-1 MAC) will meet on Sunday afternoon. Match time is 1 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field. The Lancers will square off against Ohio in conference play on Friday evening (6 p.m.) in Farmville, Va., before heading to Lynchburg for Sunday’s matinee.

    Lady Flames News and Notes
    • Liberty is 3-8 all-time against Connecticut. The Lady Flames have won each of the last three meetings, including last year’s BIG EAST title game. Prior to that, the Huskies had won nine straight BIG EAST crowns.
    • The Lady Flames hold a 7-4 all-time mark against the Longwood Lancers. Liberty topped Longwood 3-1 on the road last season.
    • Liberty split its pair of games last weekend, downing Georgetown 10-0 in its BIG EAST opener and falling 3-2 at No. 25 James Madison. UConn enters Friday’s matchup riding a four-game winning streak, with all four victories coming against top-25 teams. The Huskies most recently defeated No. 16 William & Mary 3-1, last Sunday in Williamsburg, Va. Longwood has lost its last two matches, including a 2-0 setback at Indiana last Sunday.
    • Liberty is 2-2 all-time in games played at UConn’s George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. Both of those victories came at last year’s BIG EAST Championship. The Lady Flames bested Temple 4-2 in the semifinals, followed by the 1-0 win over the host Huskies in the title match.
    • The Lady Flames were picked to finish first in the 2022 BIG EAST Field Hockey Preseason Coaches’ Poll. This is the first time in school history Liberty has been selected to win the conference. The Lady Flames were tabbed to finish second in the conference in each of their six seasons in the league (2016-21).
    • Seniors Lizzie Hamlett and Bethany Dykema both received BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll distinction this week. Both players recorded five-point games (2 g, 1 a) in Liberty’s 10-0 shutout of Georgetown, last Friday.
    • Liberty is No. 1 in the nation in five categories: goals per game (4.86), scoring average (4.75), assists per game (3.86), points per game (13.57) and scoring margin (3.77). The Lady Flames are also second in the country in shutouts per game (0.57) and eighth in penalty corners per game (8.00) and goals-against-average (0.98).
    • Liberty dropped four spots to No. 16 in this week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. Prior to this week, the Lady Flames had been listed among the top 15 teams in the country in 21 straight polls. Meanwhile, UConn moved up two spots from No. 11 to No. 9.
