    No. 1 Seed Liberty Set to Defend Title at ASUN Championship

    No. 36 ranked Liberty will be the No. 1 seed in the 2022 ASUN Men’s Golf Championship where the Flames will look to defend their conference title.

    The three-day, 54-hole event returns to the University of Georgia Golf Course (par 71, 7,259 yards) in Athens, Ga., site of Liberty’s victory in 2021. The event gets underway on Sunday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

    Last year, Liberty captured the program’s sixth conference title when the Flames recorded a 13-shot victory with a winning score of 20-under par 832 (273-281-278).

    The tournament’s 12-team field includes three teams currently ranked inside the top 75 in the country in the latest Golfstat national rankings: No. 1 seed Liberty (No. 36 nationally), No. 2 seed North Florida (No. 39) and No. 3 seed FGCU (No. 53).

    Liberty, North Florida and FGCU will be sent off the No. 1 tee at the home course of the Georgia Bulldogs beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Play will conclude on Tuesday where the 2022 ASUN Conference men’s golf champion will be crowned.

    Tournament Reflections – Liberty’s Last Showing at the ASUN Men’s Golf Championship:   

    • The Flames captured their first-ever ASUN title by posting a championship record score of 20-under par 832 (273-281-278).
    • Liberty finished the event 13 shots clear of runner-up FGCU’s 7-under par 845 (285-282-278).
    • Liberty’s Zach Barbin, Kieran Vincent and Jonathan Yaun each finished tied for fourth place with a 4-under par 209 to earn a spot on the ASUN Championship All-Tournament team.
    • The win marked Liberty’s first ASUN Conference title in men’s golf and the program’s sixth NCAA Division I conference title.
    • Liberty won five conference titles during its time as a member of the Big South Conference (2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018).
    • The Flames dominated the par-5 holes during the ASUN Championship, playing the course’s three par-5 holes per round at a combined 19-under par (4.58 scoring average).

    From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty’s Last Time Out

    • The Flames are coming off a sixth-place finish at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial where they shot a 6-under par 846 (285-279-282) at Birdwood Golf Course (par 71, 7,058 yards), April 11-12.
    • The Flames finished 11 shots behind Virginia, who won the event on its home course with a score of 15-under par 837 (279-278-280).
    • Kieran Vincent paced the way for the Flames at the event, finishing tied for third place with a 7-under par 206 (72-64-70).
    • The third-place showing was aided by a career-low round of 8-under par 64 during the second round. His 64 is tied for the third-lowest 18-hole score in program history.
    • Austin Duncan joined Vincent in red figures, finishing tied for 21st place with a 1-under par 212 (72-69-71).

    Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes

    • Liberty enters this week ranked No. 36 in the latest Golfstat team rankings.
    • Liberty has posted seven top-five finishes in 10 events during the 2021-22 season.
    • Prior to the start of the ASUN Championship, Liberty placed three players on the ASUN All-Conference teams.
    • Kieran Vincent and Austin Duncan were named to the ASUN all-conference first team, while Jonathan Yaun was a second-team all-conference selection.
    • Austin Duncan was also named the ASUN Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Isaac Simmons joined Duncan on the ASUN All-Academic team.
    • Kieran Vincent individually ranks No. 46 in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings.
    • Vincent has posted 25 career top-10 finishes during his career at Liberty, which ranks second to Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Robert Karlsson (31 – 2009-12).
    • Isaac Simmons currently leads the Flames with a last-round scoring average of 70.38, which ranks No. 64 in the country, followed by Jonathan Yaun (70.78/No. 118)
    • Kieran Vincent leads the team in par-3 (3.08) and par-4 (4.04) scoring average; Isaac Simmons leads Liberty in par-5 scoring average (4.62).
    • Austin Duncan leads Liberty in pars per round (11.87), followed by Kieran Vincent (11.85). Duncan ranks No. 51 in the country in the stat category, while Vincent ranks No. 57.
    • Kieran Vincent ranks No. 12 in the country in fewest bogeys per round (2.04 average).
    • The Flames finished their fall season ranked No. 22 in the Golfweek Men’s Golf Team Rankings, No. 24 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll and No. 26 in the Golfstat team rankings
    • Liberty finished the fall season with a 288.33 team stroke average, the fourth-best mark in program history.
    • The Flames have advanced to the NCAA Regionals nine of the last 10 regional events and to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship three times in program history (2012, 2019 and 2021).
