McKay Named Nation of Coaches Master Coach Award Recipient
Liberty men’s basketball head coach Ritchie McKay has been named the recipient of the 2022 Nation of Coaches Master Coach Award. The honor is given annually to a coach who embodies the spirit of The Coach’s Resolution, not only on the court, but also in his personal and family life, and within his community.
“It is very humbling, and I feel honored to receive an award with a meaning behind the award with some amazing men having received this award in the past,” McKay said. “I know there are so many contributors to individual honors, and I think that is why our program had a chance to be honored, because of the servant leadership that permeates throughout our program and for that I am honored.”
Past recipients of the award include Rick Barnes and Homer Drew as the Master Coach Program is based around the ideas laid out in the Coaches Resolution that calls coaches to a higher level of play.
McKay completed his ninth season at Liberty and has 199 career wins at Liberty, the program’s leader in Division I wins. In the last four seasons Liberty has been one of the most successful programs in the country, winning 104 games which ranks fourth in Division I during that span. In the last four seasons Liberty has won three ASUN Tournament titles, three ASUN Regular Season championships and McKay has been named ASUN Coach of the Year twice and was named the 2019 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year, which annually recognizes the top Division I coach in the country.
