McGhee Tabbed Back-to-Back ASUN Player of the Week
Liberty’s Darius McGhee has been selected as the ASUN Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for a second straight week.
This is McGhee’s ASUN-leading third player of the week award this season after receiving it a week ago as well as on Nov. 28. His eight career ASUN Player of the Week honors are tied for the second most ever in ASUN men’s basketball history. McGhee paces all players with his three awards this season.
McGhee averaged 25.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.5 assists in a pair of Liberty home wins last week over Grambling State and Mid-Atlantic Christian. In the 75-56 win over the Grambling Tigers, McGhee scored a season-high 36 points and set a new program record with nine three-pointers in the game. The redshirt senior guard knocked down 9-of-13 threes in the contest and was 11-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the foul line.
McGhee scored 28 of his 36 points in the second half, and he also matched a Liberty Arena record and tied his career high with five steals. The guard appeared in his 144th career game of his Flames career, also a new school record. McGhee’s 36-point output gave him 10 straight games with 20 or more points at the time.
On Wednesday versus the Mid-Atlantic Christian Mustangs, McGhee scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and knocked down four threes in only 20:54 of action in an 88-50 victory. He also added two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
McGhee is up to 428 career threes, 14th most in NCAA history. He has 2,151 career points, third most in school history and sixth most in ASUN history.
McGhee and the Flames (9-4, 0-0 ASUN) will open ASUN play at Bellarmine (5-8, 0-0 ASUN), Thursday evening. Tip time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky.
