Liberty’s Darius McGhee has been selected as a finalist for both the 2022-23 Lute Olson National Player of the Year and Lou Henson National Player of the Year awards.

The Lute Olson National Player of the Year award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I player. McGhee is one of only 25 players on the listing.

The Lou Henson National Player of the Year award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball. McGhee is one of 30 players in consideration for the award. Both awards are presented annually by collegeinsider.com.

The recipient of both awards will be announced at the end in March in Houston, site of the men’s NCAA Basketball Championship.

McGhee was named to the 2022-23 Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award Watch List on Nov. 22.

McGhee has enjoyed a stellar final season for the Flames, breaking numerous records in the process. The redshirt senior guard from Roxboro, N.C. earned his third consecutive ASUN Player of the Year honor. He broke the Liberty men’s basketball all-time scoring record as well as the ASUN all-time scoring record and currently has 2,628 career points. McGhee also set the program’s single-season record for three-pointers (153), breaking his own school record from last season (143).

McGhee is currently averaging 22.5 points per game, the fifth-best scoring average in the nation, and ranks second in total points with 764. He ranks second in the country in total three-pointers (153) and threes per game (4.50). McGhee also ranks No. 6 in the country in total field goals (255) and No. 29 in free throw percentage (87.8).

McGhee’s other accolades this season include: 2022-23 John R. Wooden Award® presented by Wendy’s® Preseason Top 50 Watch List, 2023 Bob Cousy Award Watch List,  unanimous ASUN All-Conference first team selection, ASUN All-Tournament team, Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team and MVP of Hall of Fame Classic game.

More About the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award

The award, which is presented annually to the top player in Division I college basketball and is named in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, who won 776 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch, he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.

Olson is one of just 25 head coaches in NCAA history to win 700 or more games (all divisions) and ranks ninth on the Division I career victories list. He finished with a winning percentage of .731 and is the all-time winningest coach in Arizona history with 587-190 record (.755).

He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year seven times. Olson also guided Arizona to 20 consecutive 20-win seasons and is one of only three coaches in NCAA history to record 29 or more 20-win seasons. Prior to Arizona, Olson spent nine seasons at Iowa. He won 167 games and lead the Hawkeyes to the Final Four in 1980. He also spent one season at Long Beach State, leading the 49ers to a 24-2 record and a No. 3 ranking nationally.

In 2002, Olson was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

More About the Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award

The Lou Henson National Player of the Year award honors former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach Lou Henson, who won 775 games in 41 seasons. Henson is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories.

During his 21 seasons (1975-96), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989. Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.

Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, ASUN, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, MEAC, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, SWAC, Summit, Sun Belt, WAC, West Coast.
