Liberty only competed in three events on Saturday, the final day of the UNF Invitational, but the Flames set or tied records in two of them. After helping the men’s 4 x 100 relay squad set its fourth Liberty and ASUN Conference record of the year (39.38), Donald McClinton tied the ASUN all-time men’s 100 standard of 10.29.

The Flames’ 4 x 100 relay squad adjusted its order for the first time this season, switching straightaway legs Diamantae Griffin (from second leg to fourth) and McClinton (from fourth leg to second). Brandon Letts still led off, Christian Lyon still ran the second curve, and the Flames placed second overall in 39.38.

That time took one-hundredth of a second off Liberty’s program and conference-record 39.39 effort from last Saturday’s Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va.

About two hours later, McClinton (lifetime-best 10.29, 10th place, fourth collegian), Griffin (10.37, 15th place, ninth collegian) and Letts (season-best 10.39, 18th place, 12th collegian) all ran well in the 100.

McClinton’s time was wind-legal (+1.7 m/s tailwind), so he was eligible to match the ASUN Conference all-time men’s 100 standard co-held by ETSU’s Ifrish Alberg (May 11, 2013) and Kennesaw State’s Drew Duggans (May 28, 2015).

McClinton now ranks No. 3 all-time for the Flames, trailing only teammate Griffin (wind-aided 10.19 in 2021) and Jacob Swinton (10.20 in 1994). He also moved into the East Region’s top 48 less than a month away from the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.

Letts is now No. 6 on the Flames’ all-time men’s 100 chart, with three of the five names ahead of him being teammates (Griffin, McClinton and Lyon) and one being his sprints coach (Pete McFadden).

Liberty women’s 100 dash record holder Isis Brooks came in 13th overall (ninth collegian) in the event on Saturday. Her time of 11.59 (+1.9 m/s tailwind) equals Abigail Flower’s 11.59 (+1.3) from the 2015 Big South Championship at High Point as the fastest wind-legal effort in program history.
