ASUN Release

Liberty’s Rafael Marques Da Silva has been selected as the ASUN Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the fifth time in his career.

Marques Da Silva is also Liberty’s league-leading fifth ASUN Player of the Week honoree this season and fourth in the last five weeks. This is his first weekly award since March 31, 2021. Marques Da Silva received all four of his other ASUN Player of the Week accolades during the spring 2021 campaign.

Marques Da Silva posted a perfect 4-0 record against North Alabama and Jacksonville State last weekend, resulting in two 7-0 home sweeps for the Flames (11-8, 6-0 ASUN). The junior began his weekend on Friday with wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles against the Lions. He teamed up with Beau Pelletier for a 6-2 decision over UNA’s Chris Zhang and Fedrricos Scotuzzi on court three. In singles, he downed Carlos Matarredona in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) to put the hosts up 6-0 in an eventual 7-0 triumph.

On Sunday versus JSU, the lefty from São Paulo, Brazil teamed up with Pelletier again, with the duo topping Logan Haga/Xavier Sarda Marti in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). The win provided the Flames an early 1-0 cushion and momentum in the 7-0 sweep of the Gamecocks. Marques Da Silva and Pelletier have won four matches in a row and sport a 5-1 doubles mark (1-0 No. 2, 4-1 No. 3), this spring. In singles, he won in the No. 1 slot, taking down Sarda Marti 6-2, 6-2. The Flames junior improved to 6-5 in spring singles action with that triumph, his third straight win.

The Flames have been awarded 24 ASUN Player of the Week honors in five seasons in the conference.

Marques Da Silva and No. 68 Liberty (11-8, 6-0 ASUN) are taking on No. 62 Old Dominion (11-8) in non-conference action on the road this afternoon (1 p.m. start).
