Lipscomb Rallies for 3-2 Win Over Liberty

9/26/2021 10:26:44 PM | Women's Volleyball

Liberty held a 2-1 match lead and 16-10 advantage in set four before the defending ASUN champion Lipscomb rallied for a five-set (25-12, 22-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-11) win on Sunday at Allen Arena.

Lipscomb (5-8) and Liberty (6-4) both went 2-1 at this weekend’s ASUN crossover. The Lady Flames are now 2-2 in five-set matches this season, while the Bisons are 1-2 in five-set contests. Liberty defeated Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky this weekend, while Lipscomb fell to FGCU and downed Jacksonville and Liberty.

Notable Numbers

• Lipscomb outhit Liberty, .155-.128 for the match, while holding an 11-5 advantage in aces. The Lady Flames tied their season high with 13 blocks, compared to eight for the Bisons, while Liberty led 63-57 in digs.

• Rajini Fitzmaurice recorded her second straight double-double, with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Katie Phillips (12 kills, 14 digs) registered her second career double-double. Madison Blane posted a season-high 11 blocks (one solo, 10 assisted), while Lydia Burts totaled 10 kills and seven blocks. Lindsey Hardesty collected a match-high 22 digs, while Grace Allread served up three aces.

• Meg Mersman led all players with 16 kills for Lipscomb, followed by a 14-kill, 12-dig effort from Logan Gish. Delaney Dilfer (47 assists, 11 digs) fashioned a double-double, while Ashleigh Albert served up a match-high four aces and Kamryn Bacus scored 11 kills.

Turning Point

• After a 25-12 loss in set one, Liberty bounced back to win the next two sets. The Lady Flames led set four, 16-10, before Lipscomb responded with a 15-6 set-ending run to win 25-22.

• Lipscomb built a four-point lead in set five at 9-5 and again at 10-6. The Lady Flames rallied to within one point three times, with the last being 12-11. However, Lipscomb scored the final three points and Bacus’ kill ended the match.

Quick Hits

• Phillips is the first Lady Flame since Hannah Weidner in 2014 to score 10 or more kills in each of her first three collegiate matches.

• Hardesty’s 22 digs were the most by a Liberty freshman since Margaret Latchford collected 26 digs against Radford, Nov. 19, 2015.

• Liberty has posted 10 or more blocks five times so far this season.
