Liberty’s Ferguson Selected as ASUN Defensive Player of the Week

Liberty lacrosse senior Lizzy Ferguson has been selected as the ASUN Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Ferguson is the first player in the league be named both ASUN Defensive Player of the Week and ASUN Player of the Week this season. The Fort Washington, Pa. native was honored as the conference’s player of the week back on Feb. 28.

Ferguson put together another strong week in road games at Pitt and No. 12 Notre Dame, totaling five goals, five points, five ground balls, four caused turnovers and 13 draw controls. Against Pitt last Tuesday, she helped the Lady Flames win the draw control battle 20-4 while grabbing a game-high 11 draws. Ferguson was also impactful on the defensive end, as she had three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the contest. Ferguson and the Liberty defense held Pitt scoreless over the final 18:52 in a 13-7 win. The attacker also scored a goal in the match.

In Sunday’s game at No. 12 Notre Dame, Ferguson was all over the field with two caused turnovers, two ground balls, two draw controls and a team-high four goals. She converted 3-of-4 free-position shots. Her two ground balls helped the Lady Flames edge the Fighting Irish in ground balls, 14-13.

Ferguson’s four-goal game was the second time this season she has tallied four or more goals. Through seven games this year, she is tied for the team lead in goals with 13 and has nine caused turnovers (second on team) and eight ground balls.

Ferguson and Liberty (2-5) are back in action on Thursday afternoon for a home non-conference game against the Winthrop Eagles (3-3). First draw is set for 1 p.m. at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
