Liberty's Comeback Falls Short Against VCU

8/29/2021 4:07:11 PM | Women's Soccer

Liberty came close to completing the comeback as the Lady Flames scored their first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Liberty fell to VCU 2-1 at Osborne Stadium on Sunday afternoon. VCU improves to 3-1 this season while Liberty drops to 0-3.

Scoring Summary

58’ – VCU – Bri Kropinack (Assists by Samantha Jerabek and Anna Bagley)

78’ – VCU – Aileen Guthrie (Unassisted)

83’ – LIBERTY – Maddy Oliver (Assist by Meredith King)

Turning Point

It was a back-and-forth in the first half, as Liberty held the slight possession advantage in the first half, holding the ball for 51 percent of the first half. Despite just having four shot attempts in the first half, Liberty had quality looks as all four shots were inside the box. Liberty and VCU went into the break tied at 0-0. For the third time this season, Liberty would have to attempt a comeback, falling behind during the 58th minute and the Rams extended their lead in the 78th minute. Liberty mounted a late comeback with Maddy Oliver’s goal but was unable to score the equalizer.

Key Stats & Notes

  • Maddy Oliver scored her first goal of the season and second of her career.
  • Meredith King recorded her first assist of the season and the second of her career.
  • VCU outshot Liberty 10-6.
  • Liberty had three shots on goal.
  • Kasey Jamieson and Oliver each attempted a team-high two shots.
  • Randi Palacios recorded four saves.
