    Charleston Weather

The Liberty men’s and women’s cross country teams will make their long-awaited return to action at Saturday’s CSU Buccaneer Invitational. The low-key meet, which will take place on Charleston Southern’s campus in Charleston, S.C., will mark the Flames’ first competition since Nov. 15, 2019.

The women’s 5K will begin at 2 p.m., with the men’s 8K to follow at 2:45. Liberty is scheduled to compete against a trio of Charleston-based opponents, including The Citadel, College of Charleston and meet host Charleston Southern.

    Weather Report
Saturday afternoon’s forecast in Charleston looks good for distance running, with sunny skies and a temperature in the low 50s.

    Checking Out the Course
This will be Liberty’s first time competing at this particular course, which loops around the Charleston Southern campus.

The last time the Flames and Lady Flames competed at a cross country meet hosted by Charleston Southern was Oct. 28, 2006. That day, the Big South Cross Country Championships took place at Miler Country Club in Summerville, S.C.

    Scouting the Competition
Host Charleston Southern could provide Liberty’s strongest challenge on Saturday. At the 2019 Big South Cross Country Championships, the CSU men’s team placed second while the women were third.

The College of Charleston men’s squad finished fifth at the 2019 CAA Cross Country Championships, with the women coming in seventh.

The Citadel competed in the 2020 SoCon Cross Country Championships this past fall, posting an eighth-place men’s finish and a ninth-place women’s showing.

    Great Expectations
The Liberty men’s and women’s cross country teams have both finished as the runner-up during each of their two previous ASUN Cross Country Championships appearances. This year, both the Flames and Lady Flames are picked a close second to defending champion Lipscomb.

Sophomore Adelyn Ackley, who captured the ASUN women’s cross country individual title as a freshman in 2019, was voted the ASUN Women’s Preseason Runner of the Year.

    Welcome Back
The Lady Flames boast a wealth of talent and experience on this year’s roster. ASUN defending individual champion Ackley is one of five returning All-ASUN runners from 2019, joining Calli Doan (second place), Emma Bower (10th place), Priscillah Kiplagat (12th place) and Brittany Carnathan (14th place). Additionally, Noel Palmer (second place) and Lauren Hirneisen (14th place) were All-ASUN performers in 2018 for the Lady Flames.

On the men’s side, three first team All-ASUN runners are back from 2019, including Felix Kandie (second place), Ryan Drew (fourth place) and Caleb Olson (seventh place). Joe Spitzer also made the ASUN All-Freshman Team after a 16th-place finish at the 2019 ASUN Championship.

    Fresh Faces
The Liberty women’s cross country roster will be bolstered by the addition of two talented transfers, Grace Dwyer (Furman) and Anna Hostetler (Iowa), along with Hostetler’s younger sister Marie Hostetler, the lone freshman on this year’s team.

The men’s cross country squad features a promising group of freshmen this season, three of whom (Stephen Carvalho, Kyle Harkabus and Jeremiah Mussmon) are entered in Saturday’s meet.

    Up Next
Liberty will face its stiffest competition of the regular season at the FSU Winter Cross Country Classic, slated for Feb. 5 in Tallahassee, Fla. The day’s opening race is set for 9 a.m. at Apalachee Regional Park, which will also play host to the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in November.
