Liberty Wins 4th Straight, Rallies for 5-Set Win at UC San Diego

Liberty overcame a 2-1 match deficit, rallying to win the final two sets to claim a 3-2 (25-14, 16-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-6) victory over the host UC San Diego Tritons, Friday at LionTree Arena.

The Lady Flames (5-2) pushed their winning streak to four matches with a victory in the first match of the UC San Diego Invitational. UC San Diego (5-2) sees its winning streak snapped at three.

Notable Numbers

• Liberty outhit UCSD .252-.149 for the match, leading in kills (61-53), aces (9-8), digs (67-59) and blocks (17.5-12.0)

• Liberty outside hitters Kate Phillips (.333, 14 digs) and Kamryn Bacus (.316, 13 digs, career-high five blocks) both posted double-doubles while tying for the team high with 15 kills each. Delaney Dilfer tied her career high in both assists (53) and aces (5), adding 10 digs and four blocks for her team-leading fourth double-double of the season. Trinity Watts scored 13 kills, while Lydia Burts hit .500 with 12 kills while posting a team-high nine blocks. Erica Lowery collected 20 digs for the Lady Flames.

• Ava McInnes scored a match-high 16 kills for the Tritons, while Zaria Henderson totaled 14 kills, five aces and 14 digs. Izzi Strand dished out 40 assists for UC San Diego, while Emily McDaniel posted a match-high 10 blocks and Naya Dong collected 15 digs.

Turning Point

• Liberty jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the third set and still led 22-19 after a kill by Bacus. However, UC San Diego made a furious rally late, taking a 2-1 match lead by winning set three 25-23.

• The Lady Flames led set four by the same score as set three, 22-19, before the Tritons came back to tie it at 23-all. Only this time, Liberty posted back-to-back blocks to seal a 25-23 win and send the match to a fifth set.

• Liberty removed all doubt during the fifth set, hitting .400 compared to .000 for the Tritons while running away with a 15-6 win.

Quick Hits

• Liberty is making its first visit to California since competing in tournaments at Irvine and Fullerton in 2010.

• Today was Liberty’s first-ever meeting with UC San Diego in volleyball. In fact, Liberty will be meeting all three of this weekend’s opponents for the first time (UC San Diego, Pacific, New Mexico).

• This was Liberty’s first five-set match since a 3-2 loss to Stetson, Nov. 7, 2021. The last five-set win for the Lady Flames was Sept. 24, 2021 against Bellarmine.

• This was the first time since Sept. 3, 2021 against Duquesne that Liberty has rallied from a 2-1 deficit and won a match.

• Dilfer is the first Lady Flame in the rally-scoring era (since 2001) to post 50 or more assists and five or more aces in the same match.

• Liberty’s 17.5 blocks were the most by the Lady Flames since posting 19 blocks against Lipscomb, Oct. 5, 2018.
