The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team is set to face Michigan State to open a two-match weekend in East Lansing, Mich. The Lady Flames and Spartans will square off on Friday at 5 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Liberty (3-1) returns to action on Saturday in a neutral site match versus Miami (Ohio) (3-4). Match time is 2 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The contest with the Michigan State Spartans (1-1) will be the first meeting between the two programs. The Lady Flames have faced the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks once in program history, besting them 6-1 in a neutral site match to open the shortened 2020 season.
Liberty is coming off sweeping a home doubleheader, beating East Carolina 4-2 and Longwood 4-0 last Saturday at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
Lady Flames News and Notes
• Liberty is looking for best start to open a season since the 2021 season where it began the year 6-0. Their first loss that season came on Feb. 13 against FGCU, falling 5-2.
• The Lady Flames have already played a weekend in a similar format this season to open the year. Liberty traveled to Fort Myers, Fla. to face Middle Tennessee on Jan. 13, picking up a 4-3 win in the season opener. The Lady Flames fell to Florida International by a 4-3 score, Jan. 15 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
• Liberty sophomore Maria Juliana Parra Romero has paced the Lady Flames this season by winning her last eight singles matches. Parra Romero is 15-3 overall in singles and 4-0 in the No. 1 position.
• Lady Flames junior Esther Lovato has yet to lose a singles match so far this spring, owning a 3-0 record.
• Liberty’s doubles pairing of Micaela Ode Mitre and Tiffany Nguyen have been a spark for the Lady Flames, going 3-1 (1-0 No. 2, 2-1 No. 3) to start the season. The pair is coming off of a 6-0 win over Longwood.
• The Spartans are coming off a 9-14 season overall and 1-10 record in the Big Ten. Michigan State lost in the first round of the Big Ten tournament to Iowa by a 4-3 score.
• Miami is coming off a strong 2022 season, going 14-11 overall and 8-2 in the MAC. The RedHawks finished their season losing in the first round of the MAC tournament to the No. 3 seed Toledo 4-1.
• The Spartans and RedHawks will face each other on Sunday in East Lansing.
