Liberty Notables

  • Coming off a spring season that saw the Flames post a 7-3-2 mark, Liberty will open up its 2021 Fall season with road matches at Duke on Friday and Elon on Monday. The Flames will play four of their first five matches of the 2021 Fall regular season on the road.
  • Liberty returns 10 of its 11 starters from the spring, including ASUN All-Conference first team midfielders Marko Mitrevski and Seth Clark. Both midfielders and defender Malik Smith were named to the 2021 Fall Preseason All-Conference team. Smith was a second team all-conference team member in the spring.
  • In the 2021 Fall ASUN Preseason Poll, the conference’s head coaches voted Liberty to tie Lipscomb for third place in the eight-team league.
  • Liberty started its 2021 Spring season with a 5-0-1 mark, setting a new program record with six consecutive shutouts, including victories over North Carolina and High Point and a tie with James Madison, all NCAA Tournament participants.
  • Liberty allowed 0.63 goals per game, this past spring. The Flames also finished the 2020-21 season second nationally with a 0.67 shutout percentage. Liberty posted eight shutouts in 12 games, the most by a Flames team since 2011.
  • The Flames outscored their opponents, 17-8, during its spring 2021 season. Liberty returns three of its four top goal scorers from the spring. While leading scorer Musa Morris (5 goals) has graduated, Liberty returns Clark and forward Michael Huss who each scored four goals. Forward Noah Holmes, who netted goals in wins over North Carolina and Coastal Carolina, also returns.
  • In his first season with the Flames, midfielder Marko Mitrevski led the ASUN Conference with six assists during the spring. He also scored a goal for eight points.
  • A second team all-conference member, sophomore goalkeeper Danny Cordero posted a 0.63 goals-against average and was named ASUN Defensive Player of the Week twice during the spring. Cordero, who played every minute in goal during Liberty’s 12-game slate, finished the year seventh in the nation with a .860 save percentage and fourth nationally with eight shutouts.
  • Liberty and Duke will be meeting for the first time since 2003 on Friday. Duke won the two prior meetings between the two teams. Flames’ head coach Kelly Findley has coached against Duke during his career as head coach at NC State.
  • Monday, Liberty will meet Elon for the 11th time on the soccer pitch. In Findley’s first season as Flames head coach in 2019, the Phoenix defeated the Flames 2-0 at Osborne Stadium. It was the first meeting between the two teams since 2004.
  • Liberty forward Gabe Findley was named the ASUN Freshman of the Year and five Flames were selected to the 2021 Spring ASUN All-Conference team. Of the five, four return. Forward Musa Morris and 2021 fall returnee, midfielder Marko Mitrevski, were voted to the first team. Midfielder Seth Clark, defender Malik Smith and goalkeeper Danny Cordero, all returnees this fall, were named to the second team.
