No. 39 Liberty’s quest to advance to four straight NCAA Men’s Golf Championships begins on Monday morning at the NCAA Bath Regional.

Liberty, the No. 7 seed in the regional, will attempt to finish inside the top five at the Michigan State hosted regional, earning the Flames a return trip to the national championship.

The three-day, 54-hole event gets underway Monday morning at the Eagle Eye Golf Club (par 71, 7,126 yards) in Bath, Mich.

A top-five finish secures the Flames their fourth-straight appearance at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, which will be contested at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 26-31.

The Flames entered the 2022-23 season as one of 11 teams in the country who have advanced to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship each of the last three years.

Liberty is making the program’s 13th appearance at an NCAA Men’s Golf Regional and the 11th in the last 12 regional events (Liberty did not make a team appearance at the 2015 NCAA Regionals).

  • Jonathan Yaun (70.86)
  • Josh Ryan (71.47)
  • Isaac Simmons (71.72)
  • Austin Barbin (71.83)

Tournament Reflections – Liberty’s Last Showing at the NCAA Regionals:

  • No. 7 seed Liberty carded three birdies on the closing hole of the NCAA Stockton Regional (Stockton, Calif.), May 17-19, to send the Flames back to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship.
  • Entering the final round in seventh place sent the Flames off the No. 1 tee in the second wave of teams.
  • No. 4 seed LSU was sent out on the first wave off No. 10, setting the stage for the dueling drama around the adjacent No. 9 and No. 18 closing holes.
  • Austin Duncan jumpstarted Liberty’s late rally with an ace on the par-3, No. 15 hole (179 yards).
  • Liberty then posted three birdies on the par-5, No. 16 hole (535 yards) and got impressive birdies by Zach Barbin, Isaac Simmons and Jonathan Yaun on the closing No. 18 hole (par 4, 399 yards).
  • Conversely, on the other side of the lake that divided holes No. 9 and No. 18, LSU carded three bogeys on No. 8 (par 3, 237 yards), which was its 17th hole of the day, and a final bogey at No. 9.
  • With the Tigers closing 4-over on their final two holes and Liberty finishing 6-under on its last four holes, Liberty leapfrogged the Tigers for the final qualifying spot at the NCAA Stockton Regional.
  • The Flames finished the event in fifth place with a final score of 18-under par 846 (287-278-281) following three trips around The Reserve at Spanos Park (par 72, 7,315 yards).

From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty’s Last Time Out:

  • The Flames’ second ASUN title and seventh conference title in program history was one for the record books as No. 1 seed Liberty had to go low to claim the 2023 ASUN Men’s Golf Championship, April 25-26.

  • Individually, Liberty’s Jonathan Yaun also etched his name in the record books with an 18-under par 198 (68-63-67) to claim medalist honors at the championship. Yaun’s score was the lowest individual 54-hole total in program history.
  • Liberty, who was ranked No. 39 in the country, was pushed by No. 2 seed North Florida, who won the 2022 ASUN Championship. The No. 42 ranked team in the country finished four shots back of the Flames with a 49-under par 815 (271-273-271).
  • Yaun claimed the 35th NCAA Division I individual medalist honors in program history and the third of his Liberty playing career.
