    The Liberty Flames jumped out to a 6-3 lead and then held off a late Jacksonville Dolphins rally for a 7-5 victory in the first game of a three-game ASUN series, Friday afternoon at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

    Liberty first baseman Logan Mathieu went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in the contest. Designated hitter Brady Gulakowski also had an RBI double and hit his 11th home run in the game for the Flames.

    Liberty reliever Cade Hungate worked out of jams in the eighth and ninth to close out the contest.

    The Flames move to 29-15 overall and 15-7 in ASUN play. The Dolphins drop to 23-20 overall and 9-13 in the conference.

    Notable Numbers
    – Liberty held a 10-9 edge over Jacksonville in hits in the contest. The Flames committed two errors.
    – The Flames left seven men on base. The Dolphins left 13.
    – Second baseman Nathan Keeter joined Gulakowski with two hits in the contest. He tripled and scored a run.
    – The bottom four in the Liberty batting order – Mathieu, Foster, Gulakowski and Keeter – went 8-for-15 in the contest.
    – Liberty starting pitcher Garrett Horn records the win. The left-hander gave up two runs on two hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked five.
    – Four relievers followed Horn with Hungate closing out the contest to earn a save. Hungate allowed one hit over 1 1/3 innings of work. He struck out one and walked two.
    – Jacksonville starter Mason Adams takes the loss. He allowed six runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two.
    – Right fielder Blake DeLamielleure had two hits, including his fourth home run of the season in the game for the Dolphins.

    Turning Point
    In the top of the eighth inning, Jacksonville scored twice to cut Liberty’s lead to 6-5 and moved runners into scoring position at second and third base with two outs. The Flames called to the bullpen for Hungate who got Dolphins’ first baseman Chris Coipel to line out to right field on a diving catch by Aaron Anderson.

    In the bottom of the eighth, Gulakowski ripped the first pitch from Jacksonville pitcher Bryce Fisher over the right-center field wall to give Liberty a two-run lead.

    Trailing 7-5 with two out in the top of the ninth, Jacksonville catcher Jake Berg singled and third baseman Jackson Grabsky walked to load the bases, but Hungate got left fielder Eli Flowers to bounce to second for the final out of the contest and the victory

    Beyond the Box Score
    – Liberty has won seven straight ASUN Conference home contests and eight of its last 10 ASUN Conference games.
    – Jacksonville and Liberty are meeting for the first time in Lynchburg, this weekend. The two teams had previously met 18 times, all in the state of Florida.
    – Mathieu records his second three-hit game of the season and 12th multi-hit contest of 2022.
    – Gulakowski collects the 10th multi-hit game of the season, while Keeter posts his eighth.
