    Liberty Set to Begins 2022-23 at Rod Myers Invitational

    Liberty will officially kick off its quest to make four straight appearances at the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship when the Flames open play this weekend at the Rod Myers Invitational.

    The two-day, 54-hole event gets underway on Friday morning at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C.

    Play begins on Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. with a shotgun start, followed by 36 holes of continuous play. The event will wrap up with the final 18 holes on Saturday.

    The 14-team field includes 10 teams that finished last year ranked inside the final top 100 Golfstat national rankings: Charlotte (No. 34), Liberty (No. 35), North Florida (No. 36), Duke (No. 42), Missouri (No. 45), Alabama (No. 49), Florida Gulf Coast (No. 54), Virginia Tech (No. 78), UNCG (No. 82) and Penn State (No. 83).

    Tournament Reflections – Liberty’s Previous Showing at the Rod Myers Invitational:  

    • This is eighth time the Flames have participated in this event, but it is the first since the 2018-19 season.
    • Liberty previously played in this tournament for seven-straight seasons (2012-13 to 2018-19).
    • The Flames’ best-ever finish in this tournament was in 2016 when Liberty finished as the tournament’s runner-up.
    • Former program All-American Kieran Vincent led the Flames in 2016, opening his collegiate career with a six-stroke win by posting a winning score of 15-under par 201 (67-67-67).
    • During the Flames’ last visit in 2018, Liberty finished in sixth place out of 13 teams with a team score of 7-over par 871 (289-290-292).
    • Ervin Chang paced Liberty in 2018 as he finished tied for 12th place with a 1-under par 215 (68-72-75).
    • Jonathan Yaun did play for the Flames in the 2018 event, opening his collegiate career by finishing tied for 39th place with a 7-over par 223 (79-70-74).

    From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty’s Last Time Out

    • The last time the Flames were on the golf course (Grayhawk Golf Club/Scottsdale, Ariz.) was last May when Liberty was part of the 30-team field at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship
    • Liberty finished in 26th place with a 58-over par 898 (290-303-305).
    • Liberty’s appearance at last year’s national championship was its third-straight showing in program history at college golf’s year-end event.
    • Kieran Vincent, who was ranked No. 52 in the country heading into the national championship, paced Liberty by finishing tied for 55th place with a 10-over par 220 (69-72-79).

    Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes

    • The Flames enter the 2022-23 season as one of 11 teams in the country who have advanced to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship each of the last three years.
    • The 11-team group includes Arizona State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Liberty, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Texas, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.
    • Liberty finished the 2021-22 golf season ranked No. 35 in the final Golfstat rankings and No. 38 in the final Golfweek rankings.
    • Kieran Vincent posted 25 career top-10 finishes during his career at Liberty, which ranks second to Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Robert Karlsson (31 – 2009-12).
    • Kieran Vincent and Austin Duncan were named to the ASUN All-Conference first team in 2022, while Jonathan Yaun was a second-team all-conference selection.
    • Austin Duncan was also named the ASUN Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Isaac Simmons joined Duncan on the ASUN All-Academic team.
    • Since 2011, Liberty has captured six conference titles in two different conferences.
    • Liberty captured the conference title five times as a member of the Big South Conference (2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018).
    • Liberty won its first-ever ASUN Conference championship in 2021.
    • The Flames have advanced to the NCAA Regionals 10 of the last 11 regional events and to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship four times in program history (2012, 2019, 2021 and 2022).
    • Liberty dominated play on the par-5 holes during the 2021-22 season and ranked No. 27 in the country in par-5 scoring average (4.74).
    • The Flames also ranked No. 30 in the country in birdies last year (589) and No. 46 in last round scoring (72.45).
    • Jonathan Yaun paced Liberty’s par-5 scoring efforts during the 2021-22 season as he individual ranked No. 141 in the country in par-5 scoring (4.64).
