Liberty Selected to Finish 3rd in ASUN Preseason Poll
The Liberty women’s tennis squad has been selected to finish third in the 2022 ASUN Women’s Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced on Friday afternoon by the league office.
The Lady Flames received one first-place vote and 83 points in the poll. This is the fourth straight year in which Liberty has been picked to finish inside the top-three in the league. Liberty is 12-1 all-time in ASUN regular season play since joining the league prior to the start of the 2018-19 school year.
Six-time defending ASUN champion North Florida was picked to win the conference, earning nine of the 10 first-place votes and 99 points in the preseason poll. FGCU (85 points) was picked to finish second, followed by Liberty (83 points) in third. Stetson (fourth place, 69 points) and Kennesaw State (fifth place, 50 points) rounded out the top five.
ASUN newcomer Central Arkansas (tied for sixth, 47 points), Lipscomb (tied for sixth, 47 points), newcomer Jacksonville State (eighth, 31 points), North Alabama (ninth, 27 points) and Bellarmine (10th, 12 points) rounded out the poll.
Liberty will begin its spring 2022 campaign against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Jan. 15 at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. The following day (Jan. 16), the Lady Flames will square off with the Toledo Rockets at FGCU. Liberty’s first ASUN match of 2022 will be on the road at Kennesaw State, March 18.
Liberty posted an 18-7 overall record and 6-0 mark in ASUN regular season competition in 2021. The Lady Flames’ 18 victories were tied for the second most in a season in program history. Liberty earned the No. 1 seed in the ASUN North Division and reached the semifinals of the ASUN Women’s Tennis Championship.
Liberty returns six players, including three 2021 ASUN All-Conference honorees: Alexandra Almborg (first team), Esther Lovato (second team) and Tiffany Nguyen (second team).
