Liberty remains in second place after a strong second day at the 2023 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships, held at Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

James Madison leapfrogged both Queens and Liberty in the team standings, leading with 712.5 points after scoring 457.5 today. Liberty remains in second pace, at 678, while Queens falls from first to third, currently sitting with 572 points. FGCU (442) leads UNC Asheville (432) by 10 points for fourth.

• 200 freestyle relay – 3rd place in 1:30.97 (Sydney Stricklin (23.12), Abbie Shaw (22.42), Sydney Houtz (22.88), Eva Suggs (22.55))

• Fr. Mary Herndon – Three-meter diving (6th place in 256.90 – qualified in 285.55)

• Jr. Abbie Shaw – 100 butterfly (3rd place in 53.83 – qualified in 53.80)

Notable

• Liberty posted nine top-eight finishes on Thursday night, including seven podium finishes. For the meet, Liberty has earned 15 A Finals, 10 podiums and two event victories.

• Liberty finished 2-3 in the 400 IM, as last year’s champion, Grace Isaacs, finished second in 4:17.96. Genna Joyce took third with a time of 4:20.60. Isaacs and Joyce both picked up their second career CCSA individual event medal.

• Similarly, Liberty took second and third in the 200 free, with three-time CCSA 200 free champion coming in second at 1:47.56 and Shelby Kahn finishing third in 1:47.61. It was Suggs’ eighth career conference podium finish and Kahn’s second.

• Junior Abbie Shaw earned her third career CCSA podium finish, placing third in 53.83. Shaw’s previous two CCSA medals came last year, when she won both the 100 back and 200 back. Chloe Harris, last night’s 200 IM winner, finished fourth in the 100 fly tonight, .06 seconds behind Shaw.

• The Lady Flames finished second in the 400 medley relay in 3:36.85, being edged out by Queens (3:36.64).

• Liberty earned a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in a season-best 1:30.97, behind Queens and James Madison. Last year, the Lady Flames finished third in the CCSA 200 free relay in 1:32.80.

Historically Speaking

• Liberty’s 400 medley relay from tonight is ranked third in program history at 3:36.85.

• Shaw’s 52.92 leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay is a lifetime best for her in 100 backstroke, ranking third all-time at Liberty.

• Gooding moved into eighth place in program history in three-meter diving with her 250.35 from prelims this morning.

• Shaw (53.80 in prelims) and Harris (53.89 in A Final) are the fifth and sixth Lady Flames all-time to break 54 second in the 100 fly. They now rank fourth and fifth, respectively, on Liberty’s 100 fly top 10 performers list.

• Joyce is now ranked sixth in program history in the 400 IM at 4:20.60.

• Suggs (1:47.56) and Kahn (1:47.61) are now ranked third and fourth, respectively, on the program’s top 10 performers list in the 200 freestyle.

• The Lady Flames’ 200 free relay of 1:30.97 ranks sixth on the program’s top 10 list, the first time since 2020 that Liberty has broken 1:31 in the 200 free relay.
