Liberty, the four-time defending conference champion, sits in second place after day one of the 2023 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships, held at Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

Conference newcomer Queens leads with 315 points, followed by Liberty in second with 256. James Madison is one point behind the Lady Flames, while UNC Asheville (183) is fourth and FGCU (151), last year’s runner-up, is fifth.

Notable

• Liberty posted six top-eight finishes on Wednesday night, including three podium finishes and two event victories.

• Harris earned her second career CCSA individual-event victory, winning the 200 IM in 1:59.65. She now has six career conference podium finishes. The junior placed third in the CCSA 200 IM as both a freshman and sophomore.

• Penn State transfer, sophomore Shelby Kahn, claimed her first conference medal, placing second in the 500 freestyle in 4:50.45.

• The Lady Flames won the 200 medley relay in 1:38.99, led off by a scorching 24.34 50 backstroke from Abbie Shaw and closed with a 22.48 anchor from Eva Suggs.

Historically Speaking

• Abbie Shaw’s leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay (24.34) breaks Payton Keiner’s program record for 50 backstroke by .48 seconds.

• Liberty’s top 10 performers list got much faster in the 200 IM after tonight. Chloe Harris’ 1:59.65 ranks second, while Jess Schellenboom’s 2:01.70 in the B Final is fifth and Kate Baker’s 2:02.00 from the B Final is sixth. Grace Isaacs now sits in 10th with her 2:02.81 from this evening.

• The Lady Flames’ 200 medley relay time of 1:38.99 is fourth on the program’s all-time top 10 list in the event.

• Shelby Kahn is now ranked seventh all-time at Liberty in the 500 freestyle with her 4:52.82 this morning.

• Sydney Stricklin became the 10th swimmer in program history to break 23 seconds in the 50 freestyle and ranks ninth in program history at 22.93.

Tomorrow’s action on day two of the 2023 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships begins at 10 a.m. with exhibition heats of the 200 freestyle relay. Thursday’s program will also feature the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, three-meter diving and 400 medley relay.
