No. 39 Liberty will begin its Spring Break at the beach when the Flames participate at the 2022 General Hackler Championship, next Sunday and Monday.

The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Coastal Carolina at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club (par 72, 7,233 yards) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The event has been contested each year since 2002 and has been hosted at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club since 2015.

The tournament’s 15-team field includes a dozen teams currently ranked inside the top 75 in the country in the latest Golfstat national rankings: Oklahoma State (No. 2), Auburn (No. 18), Louisville (No. 33), NC State (No. 34), ETSU (No. 35), North Florida (No. 36), South Carolina (No. 38), Liberty (No. 39), Kent State (No. 46), Virginia (No. 47), UCF (No. 65) and UNCG (No. 70).

Play gets underway on Sunday at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start (36 holes). The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Monday.

Tournament Reflections – Previous Showing at the Coral Creek Club Invitational:  

  • Liberty has played in this event three previous times (2018-20) with the last time coming in 2020.
  • The 2020 event was the last tournament Liberty participated in prior to the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the remainder of the season (March 9-10, 2020).
  • Liberty finished the 2020 event as the runner-up, carding an 8-under par 856 (288-283-285).
  • The Flames took third place in 2019 in this event and finished in 12th place during their inaugural appearance in 2018.
  • Kieran Vincent has a pair of top-10 career finishes (2019: T10 -4 212; 2020: T10 -2 214) at this event and a 71.0 career stroke average.
  • Jonathan Yaun finished tied for 16th place in 2020 at this tournament, carding an even par 216.

From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty’s Last Time Out

  • The Flames wrapped up their third-straight spring tournament in the state of Florida with a fourth place showing at the Coral Creek Club Invitational (Feb. 28 – March 1).
  • Liberty finished the FGCU hosted tournament by carding an even par total of 852 (282-284-286) following three trips around the Coral Creek Club (par 71, 7,143 yards).
  • Liberty’s Austin Duncan paced the Flames at the FGCU hosted event, finishing seventh place with a 3-under par 210 (68-73-69).
  • Tournament host FGCU dominated play throughout the event, posting a winning score of 14-under par 838 (272-283-283).

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes

  • Liberty enters the General Hackler Championship ranked No. 39 in the latest Golfstat team rankings.
  • The Flames finished their fall season ranked No. 22 in the Golfweek Men’s Golf Team Rankings, No. 24 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll and No. 26 in the Golfstat team rankings
  • Liberty finished the fall season with a 288.33 team stroke average, the fourth-best mark in program history.
  • Returning All-American and redshirt senior Kieran Vincent paced Liberty during the fall with a 72.33 stroke average.
  • Liberty had four other players finish the fall season less than one stroke behind Vincent in scoring average: Austin Duncan (72.44), Connor Polender (72.56), Jonathan Yaun 972.89) and Isaac Simmons (73.00).
  • Liberty entered the spring season looking to defend its ASUN Championship with the 2022 conference championship set for April 24-26 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
  • The Flames have advanced to the NCAA Regionals nine of the last 10 regional events and to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship three times in program history (2012, 2019 and 2021).
