The Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse team earned its first win of the season, taking down the VCU Rams 15-3 at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.

On a cold and rainy Saturday, Liberty (1-2) held VCU (3-2) to zero shots in each of the second and third quarters, allowing seven shots over 60 minutes of play.

Two Lady Flames recorded hat tricks, with Lizzy Ferguson scoring a career-high five goals and Kelly Scott scoring a career-best three goals.

The win snapped the Ram's three-game winning streak along with getting the Lady Flames their first win of the season. Liberty takes a 2-1 series lead over VCU and improve to 7-7 all-time in home openers.

After winning a career-high 13 draw controls last Saturday at Richmond, Liberty's midfielder Ferguson nabbed 11 draw controls. Going into the game today, the senior was second in the nation in draw controls per game with 10.50 per contest.

Turning Point

After VCU scored with 1:41 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 5-2, Liberty rattled off 10 unanswered goals to put the game out of the Rams' reach. The Lady Flames held the Rams scoreless from the 1:41 mark of the second period until the 1:35 mark of the fourth quarter.

First Half Summary

Lizzy Ferguson got the scoring started for the Lady Flames in the first minute of the game, assisted by Jordan Sheive. Liberty jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first 15 minutes with five different goal scorers, led by two tallies from Ferguson.

• Four other Lady Flames scored in the half to give Liberty a 9-2 lead going into halftime.

• VCU failed to record to record a shot in the second quarter.

Second Half Summary

• Liberty remained stout on defense, continuing to hold the Rams without a shot throughout the third quarter. Prior to today, the Lady Flames had never held an opponent to no shots in a single quarter. Liberty did it twice today, in the third quarter and the second.

• Ferguson recorded three of her five goals in the second half. Scott completed her hat trick with her third goal of the day and fourth of the season at the 4:36 mark of the third quarter.

Key Stats & Notes

• Liberty goalkeeper Mara Tellers earned her first career win in goal. Tellers made three saves in the contest and added two ground balls and a caused turnover.

• Along with 11 draw controls, Ferguson was everywhere on the field, collecting five goals on nine shots (seven on goal), two caused turnovers and one ground ball.

• In her first career start, freshman defender Madeline Klunder caused two turnovers and snagged two ground balls.

• The Liberty defense stepped up in a big way Saturday. Outside of holding the Rams' offense to seven shots, the Lady flames caused 14 turnovers and scooped up 20 ground balls.

• This was the first game in which Liberty sisters Andrea and Katie Colavito both recorded a goal in the same game.

• Liberty dominated the shot totals over the course of the match, rattling off 33 shots (27 on goal) compared to the Rams' seven shots (six on goal).

• Liberty controlled possession throughout the game with help from Ferguson and others excelling at draw controls. Liberty totaled 16 draw controls, while the Rams only collected five.

• The last time Liberty surrendered three goals or less in a game was on March 26, 2021, a 24-2 home win over Delaware State.

• The Lady Flames and Blue Devils have met twice, as Liberty is still looking for their first win in the series. The two last met in 2022, with the Blue Devils taking the close 8-7 win at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
