ITA Division I Women’s Rankings: Atlantic Region

The Liberty women’s tennis team closed the year as the No. 6-ranked team in the Atlantic Region in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Regional Rankings.

In addition, Lady Flames freshman Maria Juliana Parra Romero garnered a No. 13 singles ranking for the region.

Liberty’s No. 6 ranking is its second best regional ranking to finish a season in program history, behind only the 2019 squad which finished the year as the No. 5 squad in the Atlantic Region.

The Lady Flames matched a school record with 19 wins in 2022 (19-8, 6-3 ASUN) and reached the ASUN Women’s Tennis Championship final for the first time in program history. Liberty defeated No. 5 seed Central Arkansas and No. 1 seed FGCU to reach the championship match.

Parra Romero is making her first appearance in the regional rankings after earning the 2022 ASUN Freshman of the Year award. The Bucaramanga, Colombia native was also an ASUN All-Conference first team member and ASUN All-Tournament team honoree in a sensational first campaign for Liberty. Parra Romero earned ASUN Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career on Feb. 22.

Parra Romero set the program record for singles wins in a season with 29, eclipsing the previous record of 28 wins, set by Jordan Jenkins in 2010. The freshman posted a 29-5 overall singles mark, 18-3 spring record and 14-2 mark in the No. 1 slot in the lineup. She posted a 7-1 record in ASUN regular season competition and was 3-0 in singles at the ASUN Championship. In her first fall with the Lady Flames, Parra Romero was 11-2 in singles play.

Parra Romero’s historic first season has already put her in the program’s record book. She has the best singles winning percentage in program history (min. 20 wins), .853 (29-5 record).
