    The Liberty women’s cross country team displayed its depth during the Queen City Invite, Friday at McAlpine Creek Park. Hours after some of their teammates placed fourth at the Roy Griak Invitational, the Lady Flames came in seventh of 32 women’s squads. Meanwhile, sophomores Stephen Carvalho (24:20) and Jeremiah Mussmon (24:47) each clocked huge personal bests in the men’s 8K.

    Kristiana Young (13th place, 18:05) and Kyley Sorg (16th, 18:12) each ran 5K personal bests for the Lady Flames, whose score of 203 points matched that of Charlotte. However, for the second time on the day, Liberty lost a tiebreaker and ended up seventh overall. Milligan (58) and Anderson (83) finished 1-2 in the women’s team battle.

    Milligan made it a sweep of the team championships, defeating host Queens by a score of 33-75 on the men’s side. Liberty did not record a men’s team score with only three Flames entered in the race.

    Race Reactions

    • Six of the Lady Flames’ nine runners were making their Liberty cross country debuts. These included a pair of transfers (Catherine Farrell: Manhattan and Madison Hemenway: Hardin-Simmons) and four freshmen (Hope Carr, Samantha Troup, Rebekah Simmons and Sofia Van Arsdale).
    • Carvalho lowered his 8K personal best from 26:07 to 24:20, while Mussmon slashed his best from 26:09 to 24:47.
    • Competing unattached, Liberty freshman Will Jefferson ran 24:10 for third place in the men’s 8K.
    • Liberty faced first-year ASUN Conference member Jacksonville State for the first time this season. The Gamecocks placed ninth in the women’s race and 11th in the men’s competition.
