    The Liberty women’s cross country team placed an impressive fourth in the gold 6K race at today’s Roy Griak Invitational, defeating No. 6 Michigan State, among others. Meanwhile, the men’s squad recorded a 10th-place team finish in the men’s gold 8K race at the Les Bolstad Golf Course.

    Adelyn Ackley (sixth place) and Calli Doan (seventh) both posted lofty individual finishes to pace the Lady Flames’ effort. The host team, No. 10 Minnesota, defeated No. 30 Iowa State by 30 points (51-81) to take the women’s team title. Behind them, Liberty was part of a three-way logjam for third, fourth and fifth places among the 21-school field.

    The Lady Flames finished with 100 team points, matching Tennessee’s score and ending up a single point ahead of the No. 6 Spartans. Tennessee won the tiebreaker for third place, leaving Liberty fourth and Michigan State fifth.

    On the men’s side, No. 3 BYU defeated No. 10 Iowa State by a single tally (34-35) for top honors. Ryan Drew’s 21st-place finish in his season debut led the Flames to a score of 317, putting them 10th of 21 squads in the final standings.

    Race Reactions

    • The last time Liberty competed at the Roy Griak Invitational (Sept. 23, 2006), Piper Newby led the Lady Flames with a 70th-place finish. Today, all six Lady Flames entrants crossed the finish line inside the top 48.
    • Ackley and Doan both defeated Georgia Tech’s Nicole Fegans (eighth place), who came in 12th individually at the 2020 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships contested this spring.
    • Landon Miller was one of the biggest movers in the men’s race. After going through the mile mark in 170th place, he moved up to 162nd at the 3K, 110th at the 5K and 67th at the finish line.
    • Freshman Jack Cottrell donned a Liberty uniform for the first time in his collegiate career on Friday. Teammates Drew, Felix Kandie, Caleb Olson and Kipruto Kogei and Lady Flame Marie Hostetler each made their season debuts.

    A group of Liberty runners will be in action later today at the Queen City Invite in Charlotte, N.C. The women’s 5K will begin at 4:15 p.m. and the men’s 8K will get started at 5 p.m., with both races taking place at McAlpine Creek Park.
