The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team (1-1) is set to face East Carolina (1-1) and Longwood (0-1) for their home opener in a doubleheader on Saturday at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
The first match with East Carolina begins at 9 a.m., followed by a contest against Longwood at 5 p.m. The Pirates and Lancers will square off in a neutral site bout at 1 p.m.
Liberty opened its season with a pair of neutral site matches in Fort Myers, Fla. against Middle Tennessee (Jan. 13) and Florida International (Jan. 14). The Lady Flames topped MTSU 4-3 and fell to FIU by a 4-3 score to split their opening weekend of competition.
Lady Flames News and Notes
• Liberty last faced East Carolina six years ago in 2017, taking the home win 4-3. The Lady Flames hold a 2-4 record all time versus the Pirates.
• The Lady Flames have met the Lancers 20 times, with Liberty holding a 16-4 record. The two last played in 2022, with the Lady Flames picking up a 7-0 sweep at the Liberty Tennis Complex. Liberty has swept Longwood 7-0 in five straight meetings dating back to the 2017 campaign and has topped the Lancers in 11 straight contests overall.
• The Lady Flames have won nine straight home openers and are 15-7 all-time. Their last loss in a home opener came in 2013, a 4-2 setback to Charlotte. The Lady Flames beat Longwood in their 2017 home opener by a 7-0 score.
• Saturday will be the first of two doubleheaders that Liberty will host this season. The second will be Feb. 10 against Norfolk State and Maryland.
• Liberty hosted two doubleheaders in the 2022 season, with one featuring Longwood. The Lady Flames went 4-0 in these matches, dropping only two total points between them.
• Liberty sophomore Maria Juliana Parra Romero was named the ASUN Player of the Week on Jan. 18, her second career honor. She is 2-0 at No. 1 singles to start the spring and leads the team with 13 singles triumphs between spring and fall competition.
• Liberty returns nine players, led by last year’s ASUN Freshman of the Year and All-Conference first team selection Parra Romero. ASUN All-Conference first team selection Esther Lovato returns, along with ASUN All-Conference second team selection Tiffany Nguyen. Lovato is 12-1 in singles (2-0 spring, 10-1 fall) so far this season.
• Liberty was picked to finish third in the league in the 2023 ASUN Women’s Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll, behind only North Florida (No. 1) and defending ASUN champion Stetson (No. 2).
• The Lady Flames matched a program record with 19 wins in 2022 and reached the ASUN Women’s Tennis Championship title match for the first time in school history. Liberty fell 4-2 to Stetson in the final.
• East Carolina finished 2022 with a 4-15 record. Longwood was 8-13 with a 2-6 Big South record last season.
