    The Liberty swimming & diving team finished in second place at the 2021 TYR ’85 Invite, which wrapped up Sunday at Liberty Natatorium.

    The meet came down to the last event, the 400 freestyle relay. Campbell overtook the Lady Flames, winning by one point overall (2,422 to 2,421). Marshall finished third with 2,326.5, while ECU scored 891.5 points for fourth.

    Liberty tied its highest team finish at an in-season invitational since a second-place showing at the 2018 Liberty Invitational.

    Notable
    • Liberty took first (Emma Hazel) and third (Eva Suggs) in the 200 backstroke.

    • For the meet, Liberty posted six individual-event victories. After winning two individual events last night, Liberty claimed one-meter diving (Lauren Chennault), three-meter diving (Maddie Freece), 50 freestyle (Heather Gardner), 400 IM (Grace Isaacs), 100 backstroke (Abbie Shaw) and 200 backstroke (Emma Hazel).

    • Sydney Stricklin’s 100 freestyle time of 51.74, Jessica Schellenboom’s 200 breaststroke time of 2:17.89 and Mary-Ashlynne Gordon’s 1,650 freestyle time of 18:04.14 were all team season-best times in those respective events.

    • Liberty posted a season best time in the 400 freestyle relay (3:27.82).

    • Campbell earned its second straight TYR ’85 Invite championship.

    • This week’s invitational gives teams a preview of a prelims-finals program that will be used at the 2022 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships, which Liberty will host.

    Historically Speaking
    • Liberty has won the 200 backstroke at all three TYR ’85 Invites, as Payton Keiner won the event in both 2019 and 2020 and Emma Hazel won tonight.
