Liberty turned in one of its grittiest performances of the season, battling Kennesaw State through five sets before the Owls prevailed, 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 17-25, 15-11) on Friday at Liberty Arena.

Kennesaw State ran its winning streak to seven matches, improving to 15-8 on the season and 9-3 in ASUN play. The Lady Flames fell to 9-10, including a 5-7 mark in conference play. Liberty is 2-4 in five-set matches this season, while KSU is 3-2 in five-set contests.

Notable Numbers

• Liberty outhit KSU for the match, .199-.178, holding the Owls well below their season hitting percentage of .213. The Lady Flames also led 64-60 in digs, but KSU held advantages in kills (64-55), aces (5-3) and blocks (15-7)

• Lauren Chastang recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 18 digs to go along with four blocks. Meanwhile, Emma Schurfranz posted 14 kills and five blocks and Dani Ballou turned in 11 kills. Jasmine Brown led all players with eight blocks, while McKinley Ferguson dished out a match-high 47 assists and Shelby Dennis collected 17 digs.

• Trinity Watts scored 12 kills to lead three Lady Flames in double figures. Kate Phillips registered her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. Kennedi Sutter hit .350 with 10 kills, while Amaya Williams dished out a team-high 26 assists. Rajini Fitzmaurice tied for the match high with 18 digs.

Turning Point

• Liberty battled to a 25-23 first-set win, leading 24-20 before KSU fought off three straight set-point tries. Fitzmaurice cashed in a kill on a long rally to secure the two-point win.

• After Kennesaw State responded with wins in sets two and three, Liberty outhit the Owls .273-.029 in a resounding 25-17 set-four win.

• KSU jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in set five and did not allow the Lady Flames to come back, hitting .500 during the set and posting three blocks in a 15-11 win.

Quick Hits

• Kennesaw State holds a 13-0 advantage over Liberty in the all-time series, including 2-0 this season. Tonight was the first time that the Lady Flames and Owls have gone five sets in a head-to-head match.

• Phillips’ five double-doubles are the most by a Liberty freshman since Leah Clayton totaled 10 double-doubles in 2016.

• The Lady Flames are 8-3 in sets decided by exactly two points this season.

• Liberty is now 6-1 this season when winning the first set, as tonight was the first time since March 6, 2021 at Kennesaw State that the Lady Flames won the opening set and lost the match.

Up Next

The Lady Flames remain home, and will host ASUN East Division leader FGCU next Friday at 6 p.m. at Liberty Arena. Two days later, next Sunday, Liberty will host Stetson at 1 p.m.
