Horn Named to NCBWA Freshmen All-American Team
Liberty pitcher Garrett Horn has been named to the 2022 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshmen All-American team. The team, selected by the membership of the NCBWA, was announced early this morning.
Horn was selected to the NCBWA second team. It is the second Freshman All-American team the left-hander was named to. He was included on last week’s Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s 2022 Freshman All-American team.
Horn was an ASUN All-Conference second team member and an all-freshman team selection in his first college season. The left-hander posted a 6-1 record with a 1.93 ERA over 51 1/3 innings. In 13 appearances and seven starts, he struck out 80 and walked 24. The Kernersville, N.C. native averaged 14.03 strikeouts per nine innings and held opponents to a .167 batting average.
Horn’s season ERA of 1.93 finishes fifth all-time and is the lowest for a freshman in program history with 50 or more innings pitched. He is one of seven Liberty Flames to pitch 50 or more innings in a single season all-time and post an ERA under 2.00.
The freshman was named the ASUN Pitcher of the Week for April 18 after handcuffing Kennesaw State over six innings in Liberty’s 9-2 victory in the series opener on April 14. Horn allowed one run on four hits over the first six innings to run in the contest. He struck out nine and walked four in the contest. In addition, the left-hander struck out a career-high 12 and did not allow a hit before being lifted after seven innings in a 2-1 15-inning Liberty victory at Stetson on April 29.
The Flames finished the year with a 37-23 record and for the first time in program history, went to an NCAA Regional for the third consecutive season. Liberty has had a freshman pitcher selected to a freshmen All-America team each of the past two seasons. Horn’s teammate Trey Gibson was selected to several All-American teams in 2021.
