    After helping Liberty sweep the men’s and women’s team titles at Friday’s Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational, Jacob Hess and Kayla Werner have swept the ASUN Men’s and Women’s Freshman of the Week honors.

    Making his first appearance in a Liberty uniform, Hess placed sixth of 120 runners in the men’s 8K, clocking 25:05.8. The native of West Milton, Pa., was the first freshman to cross the finish line in Blacksburg and served as Liberty’s No. 2 runner.

    A Forest, Va., native, Werner continued her successful start to the season, clocking 21:16.5 in her first collegiate 6K race to place 3rd of 117 women’s runners. She was the first freshman finisher in the women’s 6K and served as the Lady Flames’ No. 2 finisher behind All-American teammate Calli Doan.

    Liberty will compete in two different meets on Sept. 30. The Flames’ top men’s and women’s runners will travel to Notre Dame, Ind., for the Joe Piane Invitational. Another group of Lady Flames will race in the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.
