Gutierrez Named ASUN Player of the Week

4/10/2019 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis

Following an unforgettable Senior Day performance last Saturday, Liberty's Eddie Gutierrez has been named the ASUN Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Gutierrez is receiving the first ASUN Player of the Week recognition and second player of the week honor (Big South Player of the Week, Feb. 14, 2018) of his career. The Flames have featured an ASUN Conference-best six player of the week honorees this spring during their first year in the league.

"Eddie is a great leader for our team. He has taken full advantage of being at Liberty. He has an amazing story which is God's story," stated Flames head coach Derek Schwandt.

The senior from Mexico City, Mexico had a memorable week, securing two match-clinching points for the Flames in two home victories over the Stetson Hatters and North Florida Ospreys.

On Gutierrez's Senior Day on Saturday against UNF, he delivered a comeback three-set victory over Jorge Nunez (5-7, 6-4, 6-4), which gave the Flames a 4-3 triumph over the Ospreys. With the win, Liberty improved to 5-0 in the ASUN and maintained a share of first place in the conference.

Gutierrez also won an improbable point in his match with Nunez, which was featured as the No. 3 play on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 Plays listing on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. He made the play during the second set. Trailing by a set and tied 4-4 in the second set and the game score at 30-30, Gutierrez sprinted toward the net to save a ball. He flipped a shot over the net, but Nunez was waiting on the other side of the net, ready for a forehand smash.

Nunez ripped an overhead forehand, which met the racquet of Gutierrez and sailed over the net and past the UNF sophomore. In addition to making SportsCenter, Gutierrez's play has since been shared on several major tennis social media accounts, including Tennis TV, Tennis Channel and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Last Thursday against Stetson, Gutierrez also secured the fourth point of the match for Liberty with a two-set win over Christian Mills (6-3, 6-2) in a 5-2 Flames win over the Hatters.

Gutierrez is now 4-1 in ASUN singles matches and 3-1 in the No. 5 position in the lineup.

Gutierrez and the Flames (11-9, 5-0 ASUN), currently on a five-match winning streak, will play their final two ASUN regular season matches on the road, Thursday and Saturday. Liberty will first take on ASUN co-leader Florida Gulf Coast (10-8, 5-0 ASUN), Thursday at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. The Flames will wrap up regular season action at NJIT (4-13, 0-5 ASUN), Saturday at noon at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility in Newark, N.J.
