Saturday's Top Storylines
- After becoming bowl eligible last Saturday, Liberty (6-2) returns home to battle fellow FBS Independent squad UMass (1-6) at Williams Stadium.
- The Flames and Minutemen are meeting for the second straight season in Lynchburg and for the fourth year in a row overall. Liberty owns a 2-1 lead in the head-to-head series, winning the last two meetings by a combined score of 108-21.
- Liberty is 3-0 at home this season and has won a program-record 14 consecutive home games dating back to the 2019 season. That is the fourth-longest active home winning streak in FBS football.
- In his third season as Liberty's head coach, Hugh Freeze has posted a 24-8 record, including an 18-3 mark over the last 21 games. A win on Saturday would make Freeze the fastest Liberty head coach ever to reach 25 victories.
- Liberty QB Malik Willis has accounted for 26 TDs (17 passing/9 rushing) during the season's first eight games. He leads FBS QBs with 647 rushing yards and is the only player ranked among the nation's top 20 for passing TDs and rushing TDs.
- The Flames' defense ranks No. 13 nationally for sacks (3.25/game), No. 14 for yards allowed (302.0 ypg) and No. 15 for points allowed (17.9 ppg). Dating back to last season, Liberty has held five straight opponents below 20 points at Williams Stadium.
A Liberty Win Would ...
- Extend the Flames' program-record home winning streak to 15 games.
- Mark the Flames' third consecutive victory in the head-to-head series with UMass, improving their all-time record against the Minutemen to 3-1.
- Make UMass the second team the Flames have defeated three times since joining the FBS ranks in 2018. Liberty also owns three victories over fellow FBS independent squad New Mexico State.
- Give the Flames their 19th season in program history with seven or more wins, including their third in a row.
- Be Hugh Freeze's 25th win at Liberty, making him the fastest Flames coach to record 25 victories (in 33 games). Danny Rocco recorded his 25th win in his 36th game as Liberty's head coach.
- Boost the Flames' record to 10-2 in October contests under Hugh Freeze.
