Saturday's Top Storylines
- Liberty (5-2) will look to bounce back from a 31-28 loss at ULM and become bowl eligible on Saturday, when the Flames travel to North Texas (1-5, 0-3 C-USA).
- The Flames are visiting Apogee Stadium for the first time. During the teams' only previous meeting (Sept. 22, 2018), North Texas handed host Liberty its first-ever setback at the FBS level, 47-7.
- The Mean Green are the only Conference USA team ever to defeat Liberty. The Flames are 7-1 all-time versus C-USA opponents, including a 3-0 record this season. Liberty has defeated Old Dominion, UAB and Middle Tennessee by an average score of 40.7 to 14.0.
- In his third season as Liberty's head coach, Hugh Freeze has posted a 23-8 record, including a 17-3 mark over the last 20 games. Freeze recorded a 37-14 victory over North Texas as Arkansas State's head coach on Oct. 29, 2011.
- Liberty QB Malik Willis has accounted for 23 TDs (14 passing/9 rushing) during the season's first seven games. He leads FBS QBs with 655 rushing yards and is the only player ranked among the nation's top 20 for passing TDs and rushing TDs.
- The Flames' defense ranks No. 4 nationally for sacks (3.71/game), No. 5 for yards allowed (280.3 ypg) and No. 15 for points allowed (16.7 ppg). Dating back to last season, Liberty has held eight of its last 11 opponents to 20 points or fewer.
A Liberty Win Would ...
- Be the Flames' sixth win of 2021, making them bowl eligible for the third consecutive season.
- Push the Flames' streak to 16 straight seasons with six or more wins.
- Extend the Flames' winning streak against Conference USA opponents to seven games and boost Liberty's all-time record versus C-USA foes to 8-1.
- Make the Flames one of the nation's first teams with four wins over C-USA opponents this season. UAB will also be going for its fourth C-USA win Saturday afternoon, with its game against Rice kicking off at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.
- Give the Flames a 4-2 all-time record against opponents from Texas, including a 3-1 mark when playing in the Lone Star State.
- Enable the Flames to avoid their first back-to-back losses since Nov. 9 and 23, 2019, when Liberty dropped games at BYU and Virginia.
