    After the Liberty women’s cross country team posted an impressive eighth-place showing at Friday morning’s FSU XC Invite/Pre-Nationals, a second group of Lady Flames also came in eighth at Friday afternoon’s VertCross Invitational. Freshman Hope Carr paced Liberty’s contingent at the Ivey M. Redmond Sports Complex in 40th place overall.

    Appalachian State edged Radford by four points (58-62) for the victory atop the 11-team women’s field. Liberty totaled 234 points, finishing ahead of a trio of Big South teams (North Carolina A&T, Longwood and Presbyterian) at the course which will host the 2021 Big South Cross Country Championships in two weeks.

    Race Reactions

    • Sophia Jantomaso was the only returnee among Liberty’s five competitors on Friday. The Lady Flames’ other entrants included a trio of freshmen (Carr, Rebekah Simmons and Samantha Troup) and first-year transfer Madison Hemenway.
    • Troup competed near her hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C. She was cheered on by the Greensboro College volleyball team, which is coached by Troup’s father, Kevin Troup.

    Up Next
    Liberty will return to the Sunshine State on Oct. 30 for the ASUN Cross Country Championships. The men’s 8K will begin at 7:40 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K at 8:15. Both races will take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.

    The Lady Flames will attempt to defend their team title from the 2020 ASUN Cross Country Championships. Meanwhile, the Flames are seeking their inaugural ASUN crown after three straight runner-up finishes.
