Freece, Shaw Sweep CCSA Weekly Honors
After helping Liberty to a 156-144 win over UNCW last weekend, Lady Flames sophomores Maddie Freece and Abbie Shaw have been honored by the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) with weekly awards.
Shaw was named CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Week, while Freece was tabbed CCSA Women’s Diver of the Week. This is the sixth time in program history that Liberty has received both CCSA weekly awards in the same week, and second this season. On Oct. 26, Freece and Chloe Harris swept CCSA weekly honors.
This is Freece’s third career CCSA Diver of the Week honor, and Shaw’s first CCSA Swimmer of the Week award.
A native of Niwot, Colo., Shaw helped the Lady Flames get off to a great start on Saturday. She led off Liberty’s winning 400 medley relay in 56.98, giving her team nearly a two-second lead. She then led a 1-2-3 Liberty sweep of the 100 backstroke, winning in 56.63 and beating her closest competitor by 2.01 seconds. She finished in second place in the 200 backstroke, helping Liberty go 1-2 in the event. Shaw has won the 100 backstroke four times so far this season.
Hailing from Landsale, Pa., Freece turned in her best season scores in both one-meter and three-meter diving this weekend. She earned an NCAA Zone-qualifying score of 276.53 on one-meter, finishing in second place to 2021 CAA Diver of the Year Courtney Klausen of UNCW. Freece nearly qualified for Zones on three-meter springboard, scoring 279.83 to finish in second place to Klausen. Freece’s 279.83 was just .17 points shy of the Zone qualifying standard of 280.
Liberty will host CCSA opponents Campbell and UNC Asheville for a tri meet, Jan. 21-22 at Liberty Natatorium. The Lady Flames will honor their 11 seniors with a ceremony prior to the Jan. 22 session.
