Flames Wrap Up Fall with 3rd-Place Showing at Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate

    Oct 30, 2022 | Lahaina Hawaii | Golf

The Flames closed out their 2022 fall schedule in style, carding the third-lowest 18-hole team total in program history during the final round of the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate.

Liberty finished the fall with a 13-under par 271 during its third trip around the Ka‘anapali Golf Club – Royal Ka‘anapali Course (par 71, 6,700 yards).

The score allowed Liberty to keep pace with the top teams in the 20-team field and finish the event in third place with an overall score of 26-under par 826 (280-275-271). The Flames’ 26-under par 826 was the fourth-best 54-hole total in program history.

Liberty was one of nine teams in the field to post a double-digit under-par score on Sunday on a course that played to an individual scoring average of 70.50.

No. 11 Oklahoma claimed the team title with a winning score of 41-under par 811 (268-278-265). Clemson finished three shots clear of Liberty in second place with a 29-under par 823 (267-286-270).

The Flames were paced by Josh Ryan, who finished in fourth place with a 12-under par 201 (65-68-68). Ryan has now posted a sub-70 score in five of his last six times on the course.

The freshman’s 201 matched the best individual score in program history in a team event (Kieran Vincent – 201 at the Rod Myers Invitational in 2016; Jonathan Yaun – 201 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in 2022).

Ryan finished the final round with eight of Liberty’s 28 birdies during the final round. Overall, the Flames finished fifth in the field with 65 birdies during the 54-hole event.

Connor Polender closed out the fall with a career-low 6-under par 65, including six birdies and an eagle during Sunday’s final round. Polender finished the event tied for 17th place with a 6-under par 207 (74-68-65).

The Flames will return the course in three months when Liberty opens its spring slate at the 2023 Sea Best Invitational (Jan. 30-31) at TPC Sawgrass – Dye’s Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
