Flames Tie For First But Lose To Camels In Playoff At Hargrove Davis Spring Classic

3/7/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

Host Campbell fired a final round best 300 to finish tied for first with Liberty, while Campbell's Isak Pettersen sank a birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to break the tie and give the Camels the tournament victory at the Hargrove Davis Spring Classic on Tuesday.

Liberty stood atop the leaderboard after all three rounds of the two-day tournament as the Flames finished the event with a 38-over par 902 (300-296-306), while Campbell (303-299-300) overcame a six-stroke deficit heading into the final round to force the playoff.

Both teams had opportunities to seal the victory over the first three holes of the playoff, but it was a birdie putt by Pettersen on the par four, number four hole that provided the winning margin.

Both teams finished well ahead of the rest of the field as Elon finished third with a 49-over par 913 (306-306-301), while George Washington finished fourth with a 51-over par 915 (308-302-305).

San Francisco's Domingo Jojola claimed individual medalist honors as he finished with a two-stroke lead over George Washington's Brian Carroll as Jojola carded with an even par 216 (72-80-74), while Carroll finished with a two-over par 218 (76-67-75).

The tie for first place was a total team effort for the Flames as Liberty placed four of its five golfers in the Top 15. Parker McKoy (76-75-75) and Jay Calvo (79-72-75) finished tied for 12th with a 10-over par 226, while Peter Hortsman (76-75-76) took 14th place with 11-over par 227 and Andrew Turner (74-74-80) finished 15th with a 12-over par 228.

Albie Powers rounded out the Flames golfers as the finished tied for 42nd place with a 19-over par 235 (74-81-80). Liberty also had two individuals compete in the tournament as Michael Turner finished tied for 36th with an 18-over par 234 (76-79-79) and Peter Hong finished tied for 45th with a 20-over par 236 (78-79-79).

The Flames return to the links this weekend when they travel to Huntersville, N.C. to participate in the Birkdale Collegiate Classic hosted by Charlotte at the Birkdale Golf Club on Friday and Saturday.
