Flames Lead Field After First Round At Hargrove Davis Spring Classic

3/6/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

The Flames finished the first round of the Hargrove Davis Spring Classic with a two-stroke lead and stand atop the leaderboard after the first day of competition at the event hosted by Campbell on the Keith Hill No. 1 Course.

Liberty carded a 12-over-par 300 after 18 holes, two strokes better than High Point and three in front of Campbell in the 15-school field. Not all of the teams were able to complete Monday's second round due to darkness. The second round of the 54-hole tournament will be completed Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., followed by the final 18 in the afternoon.

San Francisco's Domingo Jojola and High Point's Ryan Wilson were the lone players to shoot par with 72s over the first round. Steve Ransom of Drexel and Army's Jimmy Fisher each finished the first round at one-over-par 73 on the par-72, 6703-yard layout and are currently tied for third place in the field of 84 golfers.

Liberty's Andrew Turner and Albie Powers pace the way for the Flames as the two Liberty golfers are tied for fifth after two-over-par rounds of 74. Turner overcame a rough first nine holes as he made the turn at four-over-par (40), but the senior was able to rally and card the best nine holes of the afternoon by finishing the final nine holes at two-under par (34).

Also finishing for the Flames were Parker McKoy and Peter Horstman, who are both tied for 15th place after a four-over-par 76, while Jay Calvo is tied for 50th after a seven-over-par 79.

The Flames also have two golfers competing as individuals as Michael Turner is tied for 15th after a four-over-par 76, while Peter Hong is tied for 33rd after a six-over-par 78.
