Flames Lead By One Entering Final Day Of JMU Invitational

10/10/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

The Flames fired back-to-back under par rounds to climb atop the leaderboard after the first day of competition at the James Madison Invitational as Liberty leads the field of 12 teams by one stroke over host James Madison and George Mason.

Liberty took the lead on the first 18 holes of the day as the Flames fired a five-under-par 279 and followed with a three-under-par 281 on the second 18 holes during the afternoon at the par-71, 6,517 yard Lakeview Golf Course. James Madison (285-276) and George Mason (279-282) both finished the first day of competition with a seven-under-par 561.

The top of the leaderboard is tightly packed as seven of the 12 teams in the field enter the final 18 holes of competition just five shots behind the Flames.

James Madison's Jay Lindell leads the field of 67 individual competitors as he stands at seven-under-par 135 (66-69), while Liberty's Andrew Turner (69-67) is in a three-way tie for second place along with George Mason's Mike Kirby (66-70) and St. Bonaventure's Andy Whalen (70-66) are all tied at six-under-par 136.

Also helping the Flames to the first-place lead were Parker McKoy, who is tied for 11th place at two-under-par 140 (69-71), Raul Calvo, who is tied for 19th at even par 142 (70-72), Peter Horstman, who is tied for 39th place at four-over-par 146 (71-75) and Stephan Hawk, who is tied for 58th place at eight-over-par 150 (79-71).

The Flames will look to fend off the remaining eleven teams in the James Madison Invitational field and claim the team trophy with a final 18 holes on Tuesday back at the Lakeview Golf Course.
