Flames Lead By 12 Strokes After First Day At Frank Landrey Invitational

10/17/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

The Flames were able to weather the blustery conditions of the first round and post a pair of solid rounds to lead by 12 strokes after 36 holes of competition at the first annual Frank Landrey Intercollegiate Invitational, being played at the Poplar Grove Golf Course on Monday.

Liberty was the only school to post a score below 300 in the first round as the Flames opened the day with a one-over-par 289, while Liberty's second team followed with a 10-over-par 298. The Flames nearest competitors after the first round were George Mason and Rutgers as both programs finished the morning rounds with 12-over-par 300.

However, the conditions surrounding the course calmed down for the afternoon, resulting in a more competitive second round as six of the 10 teams posted scores below 300.

Liberty still maintains its lead heading into the final day of the event as the Flames finished the first day with a four-over-par 580 (289-291) and lead Maryland by 12 strokes as the Terrapins fired a 16-over-par 592 (304-288) and by 14 strokes over James Madison as the Dukes carded a 18-over-par 594 (303-291).

George Mason's Mike Kirby was the only golfer to record a pair of sub-par rounds as he currently leads the field of 50 golfers with a three-under-par 141 (70-71), while Liberty's Nathan Schenz-Davis stands in second with a two-under-par 142 (74-68).

Maryland's John Eades (75-68) and Liberty's Andrew Turner (67-76) round out the remaining under-par golfers as the pair stands at one-under-par 143, which for Turner was aided by a five-under-par 67 in the opening 18 holes to mark the best round of the day.

Also scoring for the Flames is Peter Hong, who is tied for sixth at two-over-par 146 (73-73), Raul Calvo, who is tied for 10th at five-over-par 149 (75-74) and Parker McKoy, who is in 42nd place with a 16-over-par 160 (80-80).

The Flames "B" team stands in fifth place and is paced by Sam Nelson, who is tied for 10th with a five-over-par 149 (75-74), followed by Albie Powers (73-77) and Joshua Mast (77-73), who are both tied for 14th at six-over-par 150, Michael Turner, who is tied for 26th with a nine-over-par 153 (73-80) and Peter Horstman, who is in 43rd place with a 17-over-par 161 (83-76).

The tournament will conclude with a final 18 holes of competition tomorrow at the par-72, 7,059 yard Poplar Grove Golf Course.
