Flames Lead After First Day At William & Mary Invitational

3/20/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

The Flames fired an eight-over par 292 to hold the lead after the first round of the William & Mary Invitational as Liberty leads the field of 22 teams after competing on the par 71, 6,871 yard River Course at the Kingsmill Resort and Golf Club today.

Liberty holds a one stroke lead over Maryland (293) and a three stroke lead over Villanova (295), while host William & Mary struggled on the day as the Tribe is in a three-way tie with St. John's and George Washington for 10th place after an 18-over par 302.

Four players battled bluster course conditions to find red numbers as Loyola's Will Shriver, St. Bonaventure's Josh Anderson and William & Mary's Brent Paladino all carded rounds of two-under par 69, while Liberty's Andrew Turner stands in fourth place after a one-under par 70 to lead the field of 115 golfers.

Also helping the Flames to the first round lead were Peter Horstman, who is tied for fifth after an even par round of 71, Jay Calvo, who is tied for 30th after a four-over par 75, and Parker McKoy and Albie Powers, who are both tied for 46th after a five-over par 76.

The Flames will look to maintain their lead and claim their first tournament victory of the spring season tomorrow with the final 18 holes of competition which will be played at the par 72, 6,432 yard Plantation Course at the Kingsmill Resort and Golf Club.
