Flames Finish First Day Of NCAA Regionals In Tie For 24th Place

5/18/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

The Flames finished the first day of the NCAA East Regional in a tie for 24th place along with Wichita State as both programs carded 23-over par rounds of 311 in first round action played at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.

No. 1 seed Georgia leads the Eastern Regional field of 27 teams as the Bulldogs fired a four-under par 284, while Wake Forest is just one stroke off the pace in second place after a three-under par 285.

The Flames are making their second-ever appearance at a NCAA Regional Championship as the men's golf program earned Liberty's first-ever at-large bid to a NCAA Championship event back in 2003.

The Big South Conference is well represented at the NCAA East Regional as conference champion Coastal Carolina currently stands 17th place after a 13-over par 301, while Charleston Southern's Shawn Hall is tied for 27th place after a one-over par 73.

Individually, North Carolina's Jonathan Jackson leads the field of 141 golfers as Jackson carded a six-under par 66 in sunny, but blustery conditions at the par-72, 7,179 course. Georgia's Brendon Todd is just one stroke behind in second place after a five-under par 67.

The Flames are led by Andrew Turner and Peter Horstman who both fired four-over par rounds of 76 and are tied for 66th place, while Albie Powers is tied for 99th after a six-over par 78. Jay Calvo and Parker McKoy are both tied for 126th place as golfers finished the first day with a nine-over par 81 to round out Liberty's golfers.

The Flames will look to move up the leaderboard tomorrow with another 18 holes of competition at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, while the three-day event will conclude on Saturday with a final 18 holes to determine the 10 teams that advance to the NCAA National Championship.
