Flames Finish First Day At 49er Classic In Tie For 12th Place

10/24/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

The Flames will enter the final round of the 49er Classic in a two-way tie with Ohio for 12th place out of 16 teams as Liberty carded rounds of 309 and 315 in 36 holes of action Monday on the par-72, 7,116 yards Cabarrus Country Club.

Tournament host Charlotte holds a commanding 12-stroke lead over its nearest competitor as the 49ers opened the event with a two-over-par 290 in the morning and followed with an 11-over-par 299 in the afternoon session for a two-round 13-over-par 589. Long Beach State (308-293) and Michigan (300-301) are in a two-way tie for second place at 25-over-par 601, while Jacksonville State is one stroke behind at 26-over-par 602 (295-307).

The Flames carded a 21-over-par 309 to open the event, while following with a 27-over-par 315 in the afternoon round and currently stand tied with Ohio with a 48-over-par 624.

Charlottes' Ray Sheedy is the lone golfer out 83 players to be in red numbers as he stands atop the leaderboard with a three-under-par 141 (68-73), thanks in part to a four-under-par 68 opening round, the best of the event. Fellow teammate Stefan Wiedergruen is in second place with a one-over-par 145 (71-74), while four golfers stands in a tie for third place.

Freshman Nathan Schenz-Davis leads the Flames as the rookie is in a tie for 17th place with a seven-over-par 151 (77-74), while Peter Hong is second on the squad at 48th place after carding a 13-over-par 157 (75-82). Andrew Turner (77-82) and Parker McCoy (70-79) are currently in a tie for 60th place after a 15-over-par 159, while Jay Calvo is tied for 66th place with a 16-over-par 160 (80-80).

The Flames will conclude the tournament tomorrow morning with a final 18 holes of competition at the Cabarrus Country Club.
