Flames Drop To Sixth-Place Finish At ODU-Seascape Collegiate
Host Old Dominion carded the best round of the tournament to climb over top of three teams, including Liberty, to claim the team title at the 26th annual ODU-Seascape Collegiate thanks in part to a five-under-par 279 on Tuesday.
The Monarchs entered the final day of competition in fourth place behind the Flames, who had a three-stroke lead over Radford, a five-stroke lead over Kennesaw State and an eight-stroke advantage over Old Dominion after the first 18 holes.
However, the homestanding Monarchs bested the field of 15 teams by a minimum of seven strokes with a final round 279, while Liberty slipped from the top spot to sixth in the final standings as the Flames carded a 16-over-par 300 on Tuesday after firing a one-under-par 283 yesterday at the par-71, 6256-yard Seascape Golf Course.
Overall, Old Dominion finished the event in first place with a two-over-par 568 (291-279), while Kennesaw State (288-288) and George Washington (295-281) finished in a two-way tie for second with an eight-over-par 576. The Flames dropped to sixth place as Liberty concluded the tournament with a 15-over-par 583 (283-300).
James Madison’s Scott Marino claimed individual medalist honors with a five-under-par 137 (69-68), while George Washington’s Brian Carroll finished second with a three-under-par 139 (70-69). Four players finished tied for third with a one-under-par 141 to round out the individuals in red numbers in the field of 78 golfers.
Liberty was led by Nathan Schenz-Davis, who led after the first day of competition along with fellow teammate Parker McKoy as both were at three-under-par; however, Schenz-Davis fell back to 12th place and finished the tournament with a one-over-par 143 (68-75).
McKoy finished tied for 17th place with a three-over-par 145 (68-77), while Andrew Turner finished tied for 24th with a four-over-par 146 (73-73), Jay Calvo finished tied for 43rd with a seven-over-par 149 (74-75) and Peter Hong finished tied for 66th with a 15-over-par 157 (76-81).
The ODU-Seascape Collegiate wraps up the Flames’ fall golf season that saw Liberty record three Top 5 finishes in five events, including a first-place finish at the Frank Landrey Intercollegiate and a second-place finish at the James Madison Invitational.
Liberty will return to the link in the spring with a full slate of events that will feature key match-ups against Big South Conference opponents and District II foes as the Flames will attempt to qualify for their second-ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals with an automatic bid by virtue of a conference title or an at-large bid by finishing amongst the tops of the District II rankings.
